Scheduled for Three-Game Set in Jacksonville this Weekend
*Schedule Change: Friday's game got postponed due to weather. A doubleheader is now scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Ball State baseball teams begins a five-game spring break trip to Florida at 6 p.m. on Friday in Jacksonville.
Games at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at John Sessions Stadium are also scheduled between the Cardinals and the Dolphins. Live stats can be found at the link above and on the schedule page.
The Cardinals (5-3) enter the weekend on a two-game winning streak including most recently a 10-4 win at Southern Indiana on Tuesday, riding a 7-run seventh inning to the comeback victory. Ball State beat Illinois 7-1 last Sunday in Conway, S.C. to start the successful stretch.
The Dolphins (3-4) swept common opponent Cincinnati on Opening Day and took a game from Delaware, but are coming off a 9-7 loss to Georgia Southern on Wednesday. Jacksonville is led by Chris Hayes in his eighth season as the head coach.
SCHEFF RAKES: Senior outfielder and 2023 First Team All-MAC selection Decker Scheffler went 3-for-5 with four RBI out of the leadoff spot, reaching base in 4 of 6 plate appearances during Tuesday's 10-4 win at USI.
Scheffler accounted for the game's big blast, knocking in Nick Gregory and Corey Miley on a 3-run home run to right field in the seventh inning that gave Ball State an 8-4 lead en route to a 7-run inning for the Cardinals.
SCHULFER SUCCESS: Junior right-handed pitcher Logan Schulfer tossed 5.1 scoreless innings on Sunday in the Cardinals' 7-1 win over Illinois. Schulfer didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, striking out three and allowing only the one safety for his first win of the year.
The Plover, Wis., native and Milwaukee transfer leads Ball State with 9.1 innings pitched this season while sporting a .125 batting average against and 1.18 WHIP.
BESTING THE BIG TEN: Ball State has gone 2-1 against opponents from the Big Ten Conference this year, allowing an average of only 2.3 runs per game against No. 20 Iowa, Michigan State and Illinois.
The Cardinals are scheduled to play in-state Big Ten teams Purdue and Indiana (twice) in April for a total of six games against the conference on the 2024 calendar.
QUALITY QUARTET: The combination of shortstop Dylan Grego, third baseman Michael Hallquist and catchers Hunter Dobbins and Matthew Gonzalez has hit .345 (38-110) so far this season with seven home runs, 12 doubles, 21 RBI and 20 runs scored.
Dobbins (1.179), Grego (1.054) and Hallquist (1.100) have each posted an OPS well north of 1.000 through the year's first eight games.
1,000 WINS IN SIGHT: Head coach Rich Maloney's 958 career wins in 29 years as a coach ranks 13th among active skippers in NCAA Division I baseball.
Ball State's schedule includes games against three coaches who've amassed 1,000 career wins: Iowa's Rick Heller (1,014), Coastal Carolina's Gary Gilmore (1,341) and NC State's Elliott Avent (1,227).
