Cardinals down Jacksonville 10-9 to complete suspended game
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Michael Hallquist homered in both games of a doubleheader, Saturday, at John Sessions Stadium, as Ball State approached a two-game sweep before rain forced the suspension of Game 2 shortly past 9:00 p.m.
Ball State won Game 1, 9-2, and holds a 10-9 lead in the nightcap. The suspended game will resume with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, prior to Game 3 of the series.
Hallquist hit a two-run home run in the third inning of Game 1, then drilled a solo shot to open the scoring in the top of the first in Game 2. Among his seven RBI on the day, he hit a bases-clearing double to highlight a six-run seventh in Game 2, then scored the tying run as Ball State erased a 7-1 deficit. The junior third baseman from Fargo, N.D., batted 5-of-10 on the day, prior to suspension.
The Cardinals built an 8-0 lead in Game 1, then needed to counter Jacksonville's six-run lead in Game 2.
In the nightcap, Hallquist started the scoring with his early four-bagger, but the Cardinals didn't score again until the seventh. The Dolphins got to Ball State starter Logan Schulfer and eventually put up seven runs over the third and fourth innings to build a lead reminiscent of the Cards' advantage in Game 1.
After posting a seven-run seventh inning at Southern Indiana on Tuesday, the Cardinals posted a six-run seventh against the Dolphins. Ball State marched 10 batters to the plate and got back-to-back doubles from Hallquist and Hunter Dobbins to knot the score.
The Cardinals added three more in the eighth to command a 10-7 lead, with Hallquist collecting his fifth hit of the day on a single that drove in Matthew Kamins with what turned out to be the game's decisive run.
Jacksonville didn't lie down, though, striking for two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a double by Josh Steidl, pulling the Dolphins within 10-9 before the rains came.
In the opening game which was rescheduled after rain on Friday, Cardinal starter Jacob Hartlaub scattered four hits over 4.2 innings, and Ball State capitalized on Jacksonville's quiet bats for a 9-2 road victory.
Hartlaub didn't reach a decision and only struck out a pair of batters while allowing three walks, but he shut out the Dolphins through four-and-a-half innings while the Cardinals built an 8-0 advantage.
Ball State put runners on base in every inning but the second, sixth and ninth, and used a four-run third to take command. Centerfielder Nick Gregory homered to lead off the top of the third for a 2-0 Ball State lead, then after Decker Scheffler singled, Hallquist hit his first homer of the day for a 4-0 lead. Scheffler, batting in the leadoff spot, also scored the game's first run when he was hit by pitch to open the game, then stole second and scored on a fielder's choice.
The Cardinals scored three more in the fifth inning, keyed by Gregory's two-run double. Jacksonville scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Ball State made it 9-2, with Blake Bevis scoring from third on a sacrifice fly from Houston King.
Gregory and shortstop Dylan Grego each had three hits for the Cardinals. Ball State batters rapped 13 hits compared to just seven for the Dolphins. Owen Quinn was credited with the win while allowing one run over two innings pitched in relief of Hartlaub. Nate Blain allowed just one hit with three strikeouts over the game's final 2.1 innings.
The Jacksonville series opens a five-game Florida road trip for Ball State over spring break. The Cardinals visit Florida A&M for another pair of games (March 5-6) before returning to Muncie to open Mid-American Conference play on March 8 vs. Eastern Michigan.
