Bowling Green Takes Game One of Series over Baseball
March 15, 2024 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team got a solid start from Nate Blain and three home runs from its offense, but Bowling Green held on for a 5-4 win in the series opener on Friday afternoon at the First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
The Cardinals (11-7, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) scored first on a solo home run to right field by Decker Scheffler in the third inning. After the Falcons (6-8, 4-0 MAC) put up single tallies in the fourth and sixth, Nick Gregory nailed a homer for the third straight game to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Bowling Green scored twice in the seventh and once in the eighth inning to provide the offense the visitors would need, as Blake Bevis tanked a two-run shot to left in the ninth for the game's final scoring.
Gregory went 3-for-4 at the plate from the leadoff spot, and Bevis collected a pair of knocks for the Cardinals.
Blain (1-1) worked 5.1 innings of two-run ball (one earned) while striking out four in his first start at Ball State. Bowling Green's DJ Newman (2-2) allowed two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings to get the win. Jacob Turner got the last two outs of the game to earn his first save of the year.
"We couldn't overcome our mistakes," head coach Rich Maloney said. "We aren't doing enough of the little things we pride ourselves in. I did like the way we battled until the end."
The second game of the series is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Ball Diamond.
