Men's Basketball Suffers Overtime Heartbreaker to Ohio

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's basketball team fought back from an early hole to force overtime against Ohio on Tuesday night at Worthen Arena but suffered a heartbreaking 84-79 defeat.
The Cardinals (12-11, 4-7 MAC) had two opportunities in the last 40 seconds of regulation to take the lead, but the Bobcats (13-10, 7-4 MAC) contested enough to force both shots off target. Ball State had chances at the free throw line in the final minute of overtime but couldn't capitalize.
Ohio got out to a 13-0 edge and led 36-27 at halftime courtesy of 51.9 percent shooting while limiting the hosts to 32.1 percent in the opening period. The Cardinals, however, scored the first seven points of the second half and eventually fought back to gain their first lead of the game after Basheer Jihad drained a pair of free throws with 13:38 to play to make the score 47-46. Both teams went back-and-forth from there, as neither led by more than two points for the remainder of regulation.
Jalin Anderson paced Ball State with 22 points and nine rebounds while adding three steals. Mickey Pearson Jr. tallied 18 points and nine rebounds, while Davion Bailey scored all 15 of his points after halftime and chipped in four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jihad went for 13 points, and Trent Middleton Jr. had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
The visiting Bobcats got 32 points, five rebounds and five assists out of senior guard Jaylin Hunter. Aidan Hadaway collected a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double for Ohio, who benefitted from Jihad fouling out with 1:26 left in regulation and the Cardinals up 70-68.
Ball State shot 42.3 percent (30-71) for the game, including 30.4 percent (7-23) on 3-pointers and made 63.2 percent (12-19) of its free throws. Ohio went 48.3 percent (28-58) on field goals, 28.0 percent (7-25) from distance and 80.8 percent (21-26) at the foul line.
The hosts controlled the glass to the tune of 45-34 and 22-6 advantages, respectively, in rebounds and second chance points. The Bobcats committed fewer turnovers (12-10) and got more scoring from its bench (16-4) than the Cardinals.
Next on the schedule for Ball State is a trip to Texas State to play at 5 p.m. ET (4 p.m. CT) on Saturday in the MAC-SBC Challenge.
