February 25, 2024 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team continues to improve despite its 4-3 heartbreaking loss Sunday evening to Eastern Kentucky at the Northwest YMCA. The Cardinals won the doubles point and two singles matches to take an early 3-0 edge over the Colonels, but it wasn't enough as EKU fought back to earn the victory.
It was a high intensity doubles point to open the match. EKU took the win from BSU on court one, but the Cardinals rallied back to earn victories on courts two and three, respectively. Sarah Shahbaz paired up with Isabelle Tanjuatco at the No. 2 slot earning a 6-2 defeat versus Eastern Kentucky's duo of Zhansaya Bakytzhan and Maria Fedenko. Shortly after No. 2 doubles finished, the twosome of Sydney Hrehor and Jacqueline Pearsall beat EKU's No. 3 doubles tandem of Izem Olcer and Sasha Parkhomenko 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for Ball State.
Shahbaz and Pearsall won on courts two and six at the start of singles in that order to give Ball State a 3-0 edge over Eastern Kentucky. EKU then earned victories at the No. 4, 1 and 3 positions to tie the match 3-3.
The win would come down to the No. 5 singles slot that saw Ella Hazelbaker in a three-frame thriller against Olcer. Unfortunately, Olcer would win 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 for the fourth and final point of the match.
The Ball State women's tennis team will play at Dayton Friday, March 1 at the South Regency Tennis Center. First serve is at 1 pm ET.
