February 02, 2024 | Men's Tennis
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Ball State men's tennis team has been on a tough four-match road stretch that ended today at Michigan State. The Cardinals (3-3) would fall to the nineteenth-ranked Spartans (5-0) by a score of 4-0 Friday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Although the score may not indicate it, today's competition could have gone either direction especially in doubles. The Spartans barely moved past the Cardinals in doubles play as the deciding point came down to the top court. After Petar Petrovic and Parrish Simmons lost on court No. 2 Ball State's No. 3 duo of Eli Herran and Sajin Smith knotted the doubles play at 1-1 with their 6-3 defeat over Michigan State's Josh Portnoy and Reed Crocker. Nathaniel Webster alongside his top court partner Mason Tran were in a tie break against Graydon Lair and Ronald Hohman but unfortunately fell to the Spartan's twosome by a score of 7-6 (7-5).
In singles, Michigan State won in straight sets on courts two, three and five in that order which clinched the match for the Spartans. Webster's match went unfinished, but he had taken the first frame 6-4 against the Spartan's No 1 player, Sebastien Collard. Herran was knotted 6-6 in his second set on court No. 4 and Drew Hayward was up 6-4, 4-4 versus Crocker at the No. 6 spot.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues non-conference action when it returns home on Saturday, Feb 10 for a 1 pm ET first serve at the Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.
