February 10, 2024 | Men's Swimming and Diving
CARBONDALE, Ill. - - In its final dual of the 2023-24 season, the Ball State men's swimming & diving program picked up five event wins, but it was not enough to carry the team to victory in a 181-118 setback at Southern Illinois.
The biggest effort of the day for the Cardinals (3-2) came from sophomore Porter Brovont in the diving well, as he swept the boards with scores of 307.73 on 1M and 328.50 on 3M.
In addition to picking up the win on 3M, Brovont's score was an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark, giving him qualifying scores on each board this season. Ball State is in Zone C for diving, which will send Brovont to the Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, March 14-16 for the event.
Moving over to the Shea Natatorium pool, senior Joey Garberick earned another sweep of the breaststroke events, clocking in at 54.87 in the 100 and 2:03.97 in the 200. It's his fourth breaststroke meet sweep this season and raises his individual win total to 11 on the year.
Ball State's other event win came from fifth-year senior Bryce Handshoe who took home top honors in the 200 butterfly at 1:53.44. It's Handshoe's first 200 butterfly win of the season, with his other two event victories coming in the 100 butterfly.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program will now focus its attention on training and tapering for the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championships which will be held back at SIU's Shea Natatorium March 6-9.
