
Slater Wins 1650 Freestyle To Lead Men’s S&D Saturday at Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio - - Sophomore Malcolm Slater picked up Ball State's first event win of the weekend in the 1650 freestyle to lead a strong team effort on the final day of the Miami Invitational.
Slater's winning time of 15:44.50 was the third-fastest in program history and included a 1000 freestyle split of 9:31.78 which also the third-fastest effort on BSU's top 10 list.
Junior Jacob Siewers turned in the Cardinals' first top five finish of the night, taking fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.68.
His effort was followed by a strong showing in the 200 breaststroke with freshman Cutter Shipman placing fourth and sophomore Aidan Biddle taking fifth. Shipman's time of 2:02.00 was the fifth-fastest in program history, while Biddle's clocking of 2:02.09 was the sixth-fastest.
Ball State also closed the meet with the third-fastest 400 freestyle relay in program history, with freshman AJ Friend, junior Mason Young, senior Ethan Pheifer and Siewers combining for a time of 2:59.82.
Overall, the Cardinals turned in 11 individual top 10 finals finishes Saturday at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center, raising its meet total to 33.
With the effort, Ball State placed third among the three-team field with 827.5 points. Host Miami won the meet at 1210.5, followed by Dartmouth (1094).
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program returns to action after the holiday break, when it travels to Indiana State for a 1 p.m. quad meet with UIndy and Southern Illinois at 1 p.m.
The men will then join the women's squad to host Evansville for senior day on Jan. 11. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
