Slater’s Program Record Leads Men’s S&D Thursday at Miami Invite
December 05, 2024 | Men's Swimming and Diving
OXFORD, Ohio - - Sophomore distance freestyle specialist Malcolm Slater turned in the Ball State men's first program record of the season, leading the squad on the opening day of the Miami Invitational.
Slater took second in the 500 freestyle, turning in a blistering time of 4:27.61 to knock off 0.77 off his own mark of 4:28.38 set at last season's final Mid-American Conference Championships.
It was one of four performances on the day to make the program's all-time top 10 list which started with a time of 4:33.04 in the 500 freestyle morning prelims by senior Alexander Eddy.
BSU's other two marks came in the evening relays. Up first was the 200 freestyle relay of freshman AJ Friend, junior Jacob Siewers, junior Benjamin Clarkston and senior Ethan Pheifer which turned in the eighth-fastest time program history at 1:21.10.
Three of the four would then close the night by combining for the fourth-fastest 400 medley relay in program history with Pheifer, sophomore Aidan Biddle, Friend and Siewers clocking in at 3:17.48.
Overall, the Cardinals turned in nine individual top 10 finals finishes on the opening day at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center, including a second-place score of 279.65 by junior Porter Brovont in one-meter diving and a third-place time of 4:33.80 by sophomore Tommy Brunner in the 500 freestyle.
After the opening day of competition, the Cardinals are currently third among the three-team field with 218 points. Host Miami leads the meet at 358, while Dartmouth is second at 260. Those team scores, however, do not factor in the day's diving events.
Action in the Miami Invitational resumes Friday with event prelims at 9:30 a.m. and event finals at 5 p.m.
