October 20, 2024 | Field Hockey
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After back-to-back weekends on the road the Cardinals struggled to get the overtime win today at Bessant Field on the campus of Queens University. Ball State fell in the extra period to the Royals by a score of 3-2.
With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 3-10 on the season while the Royals improve to 1-12 overall.
After a scoreless first quarter, Paloma Gomez Rengifo registered a quick score to open the second period off the assist from Julia Verrati to give BSU the early 1-0 edge over Queens at the 19:16 mark.
The Cardinals found the back of the cage one more time prior to intermission after Jenna Wyckoff tallied a goal which came off the assist from Emma van Hal to make it a two-score lead for the Cardinals versus the Royals at the half.
After the break, the momentum changed with a goal from the Royals' Maddie Just at the 38:17 mark in the third quarter of play.
Ball State's defense was able to shutout Queens up until the very end but unfortunately the Royals' Sydney Smith knotted the contest 2-2 at around the 54-minute mark to send the game into overtime.
Queens was able to draw two corners in the extra period, ultimately helping the Royals to score the game-winner with less than a minute to play in OT.
Offensively, the Cardinals were able to register a season high 22 shots which was led by van Hal with seven along with five shots on goal.
The Ball State field hockey team returns home this week for three contests at the Briner Sports Complex. The Cardinals will host UC Davis in a non-conference matchup Tuesday at noon before returning to league play on Friday against Ohio University (3 pm ET) and James Madison on Sunday (1 pm ET) for senior day.
