OXFORD, Ohio - - Despite claiming five event wins, the Ball State men's swimming & diving team suffered a 206-94 setback to Missouri Valley Conference rival Miami Friday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
The distance freestyle events provided the biggest highlights for the Cardinals in the pool, as sophomore Malcolm Slater took top honors in both the 500 (4:36.99) and the 1000 (9:38.82). Slater now has four individual event wins on the season, after winning both the 200 and 500 freestyles in last Friday's season-opener versus UIC.
In addition, reigning MVC Freshman of the Week AJ Friend remained undefeated in the 50 freestyle, turning in a first place and collegiate-best time of 21.33 Friday. He now has three individual wins on the 2024-25 campaign.
The Cardinals also picked up the sweep on the diving boards, as junior Porter Brovont took the top spot on both 1-meter (267.75) and 3-meter (285.95).
In addition to the event wins, Ball State received a second-place finish from Ethan Pheifer in the 100 freestyle (46.74).
The Cardinals also closed the meet with Friend, junior Jacob Siewers, junior Mason Young and Pheifer combining to take second in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:24.96.
Up next for the Ball State women's swimming & diving program will be the team's annual Alumni Meet on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
