Women’s Basketball Out Toughs Akron in OT MAC Road Win
January 06, 2024 | Women's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio - Junior Ally Becki led the Cardinals charge with 20 points. Becki made some key baskets at some crucial times while scoring seven of the Cardinals 11 points in overtime to help propel Ball State to a 71-64 OT win at Akron Saturday afternoon in James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Cardinals (12-2, 2-0 MAC) victory tonight is their 12th win of the last 15 meetings against the Zips (5-7, 0-2 MAC). With the win, Ball State also extended its win streak to six.
All-in-all it was Ball State's defense that stood out in today's victory as the Cardinals scored 20 points off the Zips 20 miscues.
Ball State also tallied seven blocks while Akron had only one. Another team statistic that jumped out was steals with the Cardinals having 13 which was led by Nyla Hampton with six. Becki wasn't too far behind in that category with five.
It came to no surprise that today's league competition would be competitive as both teams were neck and neck throughout the entire 45 minutes of action which consisted of 10 ties and eight lead changes.
Akron led the majority of the third and fourth quarters but some smart defensive plays by Becki and Hampton along with an all-around team effort made it hard for the Zips to run away with today's game.
It was looking bleak for the Cardinals in the final frame, but Hampton dished the ball to Madelyn Bischoff for a 3-pointer to knot the contest at 58-58 with under a minute left.
The Zips then scored on the ensuing possession to go back up by two. With .2 seconds left in the game, Becki drew a foul and was sent to the line for two. Becki would make both from the charity stripe to send the game into OT.
Both teams' offenses struggled in the opening stanza with the Cardinals only outscoring the Zips 10-8 which gave Ball State a two-point edge heading into the second quarter of play.
Ana Barreto drained a 3-pointer at the 8:13 mark of the second frame that eventually sparked a 10-2 run for the Cardinals which was capped off by one from behind the arc from Becki to make the score 20-10. Akron then returned the favor with an 18-10 scoring spree which left BSU with a slim two-point (30-28) lead at intermission.
For the game, Becki led with 20 points while Bischoff ended the day scoring 19. Annie Rauch netted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Ball State women's basketball team will return home to Worthen Arena on Wednesday when it hosts Buffalo at 6:30 pm ET.
