January 10, 2024 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - For the second-straight contest, the Cardinals' game came down to the wire, but this time Ball State won in regulation after completing a 66-62 come-from-behind victory over Buffalo Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (13-2, 3-0 MAC) remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference action while also extending its win streak to seven with its defeat over the Bulls (7-6, 1-2 MAC).
It's never easy to come back after being on the road seven of your last eight contests. Ball State struggled on both sides of the ball in the opening quarter as Buffalo outscored the Cardinals 27-9 in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Cardinals began to redeem themselves in the second quarter as they slowly chipped away at the Bulls 18-point first quarter cushion. This week's MAC Player of the Week Ally Becki scored seven points in the second frame while also getting help from teammates Madelyn Bischoff, Estel Puiggros, Annie Rauch and Nyla Hampton to make the score 35-28 with 2:03 remaining in the first half. The icing on the cake was when Hampton drained a 3-pointer to bring Ball State to within four (35-31) as time was winding down. The Cardinals outpaced the Bulls 24-10 to only trail Buffalo by four (37-33) at intermission.
It was raining 3's in the third quarter as Becki and Bischoff began to find their offensive rhythm's. Bischoff's 3-pointer at the 5:49 mark gave BSU its first lead of the contest (43-40). The Cardinals eventually led by eight 50-42 after a Hampton layup just under the two-minute mark.
Buffalo wasn't going to go away easily and was able to cut BSU's lead to two (50-48) to end the third stanza.
The fourth quarter was and up and down affair that saw the game tied at 62-62 with under two minutes left in the contest. Some nice defensive stops by Ball State allowed the Cardinals to attack the basket and draw fouls, sending Puiggros and Bischoff to the line. Both went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to seal tonight's win for BSU.
For the game, Hampton chipped in 16 points while both Becki and Bischoff ended the night with 13 apiece. Becki also tallied a double-double with 10 rebounds. She was also three shy from a triple double after dishing out seven assists. Rauch rounded out the double figure scoring with 10. The Cardinals' bench also played a huge factor tonight with 17 points.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its two-game home stand when it hosts Bowling Green Saturday for a 1 pm tipoff in Worthen Arena.
