No. 11 Men’s Volleyball Drops First Road Match to No. 9 BYU
January 05, 2024 | Men's Volleyball
PROVO, Utah - The Ball State men's volleyball team dropped its first road match of the season by a score 3-0 (25-19, 25-21k, 25-20) at the hands of No. 9 BYU Friday night at Smith Fieldhouse.
The Cardinals fall to 3-1 on the season while the Cougars improve to 1-0. It was BYU's home and season opener tonight.
Starting setter Griffin Satterfield dished out 19 assists while also registering one block assist as well. Patrick Rogers led the Cardinals with 16 kills hitting an impressive .714 from the floor off 21 swings. Rogers also tallied five defensive digs and three blocks.
It was a tightly contested opening set between the two nationally ranked squads, as the scored was knotted early on at 8-8 before the Cougars began to pull away from the Cardinals. BYU picked up its offense and despite BSU's efforts the Cardinals were unable to come back from a late 20-14 deficit. Ball State did make BYU work for its set point on three different possessions in the first frame.
The second set saw the Cougars pick up the pace which was too much for the Cardinals to handle. The third frame was like the first as Ball State kept within reach tying the game at 10-10 after Rogers hammered down back-to-back kills. But despite Ball State's efforts BYU used its home court advantage and would take frame three, 25-20.
The No. 11 Ball State men's volleyball team will have a chance to redeem itself tomorrow night when it closes out its two-match road series at No. 9 BYU. First serve is at 9 pm ET.
