Women’s Tennis Falls at Home to Cleveland State
January 27, 2024 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - It was the first home match of the season for the Cardinals under first-year head coach Sachin Kirtane. Unfortunately, despite Ball State's efforts the Cardinals would fall to the Cleveland State Vikings by a score of 6-1.
With the loss, Ball State drops to 0-2 on the season while the Vikings improve to 2-0.
The doubles point could have gone either direction as all three courts were tightly contested. Annika Planinsek alongside Sydney Hrehor played at the top spot while teammates Elena Malykh and Ella Hazelbaker competed on court No. 2. Both would drop their respective matches by a 6-4 decision which gave Cleveland State the first point of the match. Although, doubles play was suspended, Sarah Shahbaz and Isabelle Tanjuatco were up 5-4 at the No. 3 slot over the Vikings Tereze Vevere and Ella Franz.
In singles, Cleveland State took five of the six singles matches from Ball State. Malykh was the lone winner today for the Cardinals winning in a two-set tiebreaker at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8) over Cleveland State's Bethany Yauch. Planinsek also played close on the top court versus Oihane Vicario but lost in a two-set tiebreak.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues non-conference play next Sunday, Feb. 4 at Notre Dame with a 1 pm ET first serve.
