January 20, 2024 | Men's Volleyball
AUSTIN, Texas – Patrick Rogers had 19 kills on Saturday afternoon as the 14th-ranked Ball State men's volleyball team fell short against No. 8 Stanford in the First Point Volleyball Foundation Collegiate Challenge. The star-studded, six-team event at the Austin Convention Center also included top-ranked UCLA, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State and No. 13 USC.
The Bay Area's Cardinal won a lopsided opening set before the Cardinals of Ball State tied it and watched Stanford slip by with a 30-28 marathon win in Game 3. Ball State faced a 10-3 deficit in Game 4 before falling 25-18. Ball State (7-4) dropped its second match of the weekend while Stanford (6-0) remained unbeaten.
Stanford used four aces, three blocks and just one attack error in a dominant opening set to get past the Cardinals 25-9, but Ball State outhit the Cardinal and used three blocks of their own to win 25-21 in the second set.
Tied 1-1, the match drew tighter in Game 3 after Stanford led 19-14. Rogers and Wil McPhillips each had a pair of kills as Ball State climbed back within 24-24, and another Rogers kill knotted the score at 25. Rogers put Ball State ahead 26-25 with his seventh kill of the set, but Will Rottman's kill for Stanford negated Ball State's game point. Rottman's kill put Stanford ahead 28-27, but Rogers matched his counterpart to tie things at 28-all. With Rogers serving, Rottman's ninth kill of the game staked the Cardinal to a 29-28 lead and Rogers' attack error allowed Stanford its final point.
Rottman and Rogers combined for 17 kills in Game 3 alone. Rottman paced Stanford with a match-high 22 kills.
After battling Stanford and No. 13 USC this weekend in Texas, the Cardinals return to Worthen Arena next Sunday, Jan. 28 against No. 3-ranked Hawaii, to continue a stretch with five straight nationally ranked opponents.
