No. 13 Men’s Volleyball Earns 3-0 Sweep Over No. 17 UC San Diego

MUNCIE, Ind. - The No. 13 Ball State men's volleyball team remained undefeated at home this season after posting a 3-0 sweep against No. 17 UC San Diego Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (4-2) began to play with a lot more confidence as the match went on tonight against the Tritons (2-2) especially in the second set. Ball State was able to keep its composure in frame one and three which were close, but the Cardinals used a good mixture of veterans and newcomers which ultimately led to tonight's victory.
Ball State's offense was pretty much unstoppable tonight, hitting .600 from the floor off 75 swings. The Cardinals strongest set was in the second period with a team high .750 hitting percentage. Patrick Rogers led the Cardinals with 14 kills while Aaron Hernandez finished the contest with 12. BSU's new setter Lucas Machado led the offense after dishing out 44 assists.
Tonight's contest was competitive, especially in the first set which went into overtime. Ball State won 28-26 after a Hernandez kill that made the score 27-26 in favor of BSU. A block assist from Ryan Bartz and Hernandez on the ensuing possession earned the set for the Cardinals.
BSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead to open the second frame. The Cardinals continued to carry out their momentum throughout the second period winning the set, 25-13. Although, set three was slightly closer, the Cardinals were able to pull away late in the frame (22-18) after back-to-back kills from Wil McPhillips. Rogers then slammed down a kill for match point sealing the sweep for the Cardinals.
The Ball State men's volleyball team returns home for back-to-back matches Friday and Saturday night against Tusculum. First serve for both matches will be at 6 pm ET.
