Field Hockey Earns Fourth Straight Win; Defeats CMU 4-0 in #MACtion
September 22, 2023 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team extended its winning streak to four games with a 4-0 shutout victory over Central Michigan Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex. Â
Â
The Cardinals (4-4, 2-0 MAC) have now started Mid-American Conference play with a 2-0 record in each of head coach Caitlin Walsh's first two seasons with the program.
Â
"Our team is just taking it game by game," Walsh said. "It's nice to get a couple of wins which allows us to gain confidence and momentum. We are approaching every game like it is a clean slate and everyone's record is 0-0."Â
Â
Although today's game was a team effort, included a season high 24 shots, Fleur Knopert appeared on the box score numerous times. The sophomore sensation, and reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Week, scored three of the Cardinals' four goals. She also registers seven shots, with six finding the cage. Knopert now has eight goals onthe season and 17 for her career. Â
Â
Knopert's first goal came at the 10:11 mark in the first quarter to give Ball State the 1-0 edge over the Chippewas (1-6, 0-2 MAC). Rachel Bohn tacked on another score for the Cardinals with 15:42 on the clock in the second frame to push BSU's lead over CMU to 2-0. Â
Â
After intermission, the Cardinals stingy defense continued stopping the Chippewas aggressive second half style of play on several occasions. Knopert went on to add two goals in the fourth quarter to secure the four-goal victory. Â
Â
Defensively, Ball State held Central Michigan scoreless for the full 60-minutes of play for its first shutout win of the season. Goalie Hannah Johnston secured her fourth win by fending off four CMU corners while collecting five saves.Â
