Cardinals Split Doubleheader with Bobcats

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team was back on the diamond at Bob Wren Stadium for a Mid-American Conference doubleheader with Ohio on Saturday. Zach Lane launched the only BSU home run as the Cardinals and Bobcats split the doubleheader.
With the split, Ball State moved to 30-16 overall and 17-7 in MAC play, while Ohio moved to 17-25 overall and 14-10 in league play.
Game One – Ohio 5, Ball State 3
The Bobcats got on the board first with run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Ohio extended its lead to 2-0 on a solo home run by Alec Patino in the bottom of the third.
Adam Tellier led off the top of the fourth with a bunt single down the third base line. Decker Scheffler reached safely on a fielder's choice as Tellier was out at second. Blake Bevis singled up the middle and moved Scheffler to second base. Andrew Wilhite doubled down the right field line and plated Scheffler and Bevis. The Cardinals tied it in the top of the fourth, 2-2.
OU extended its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on one hit along two hit batters and two walks.
Lane recorded a one-out home run over the left field wall in the top of the seventh. BSU cut the deficit to 4-3 after the top of the seventh.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 5-3 with one run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded hit batter.
Ty Weatherly got the start on the mound for the Cardinals. He got the loss and fell to 1-3. He struck out two batters and gave up four earned runs on six hits. Ty Johnson went five innings in relief with five strikeouts. He surrendered one earned run on one hit.
Jacob Tate started on the hill for Ohio and picked up the win. He improved to 4-1 on the season. He struck out four batters and gave up three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. Tyler Peck went 2 2/3 innings for the save. He struck out one batter and held BSU hitless.
Game Two – Ball State 7, Ohio 6
Nick Gregory led off the top of the first with a double down the left field line. Tellier flied out to right, and Gregory tagged up and moved to third. Peltier reached safely on an error by the pitcher and Gregory was able to score on the play.
Patino hit his second home run of the day and tied it in the bottom of the first, 1-1. In the bottom of the second, the Bobcats scored three runs on three hits and took a 4-1 lead into the third inning.
Hunter Dobbins led off the top of the fifth with a walk. Justin Conant followed with a walk. Gregory singled to first base and loaded the bases. Tellier notched a sac fly to left field as Dobbins tagged up and scored from third. Scheffler singled to left field and drove in Conant from second. Wilhite tied it with a single to left field as Gregory scored. The Cardinals tied the game at 4-4 as the game went to the bottom of the fifth.
The Bobcats regained the lead, 5-4, on a solo home run by an AJ Rausch home run.
Gregory led off the top of the seventh with a single to right field. Peltier doubled to left field. Wilhite singled through the right side and drove in Gregory and Peltier. Logan Flood drove in Wilhite with a single through the left side. Ball State took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Ohio pulled within one, 7-6, in the bottom of the ninth but Jacob Hartlaub closed the door. Ball State went on to win game two, 7-6.
Tanner Knapp got the start on the mound in game two and went 1 2/3 innings. He had one strikeout and surrendered four earned runs on four hits. Logan Schulfer went seven innings in the win and moved to 3-2. He struck out six batters and gave up two earned runs on three hits. Hartlaub went a 1/3 of an inning and picked up the save, his first of the season.
Hudson Boncal started the game on the hill for OU. He went four innings with four strikeouts. He gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits. Luke Olson added three innings of relief with four strikeouts. He got the loss and fell to 3-4 on the year. He surrendered three earned runs on seven hits. Zach Weber went the final two innings with one strikeout and gave up two hits.
Ball State returns to action for a road game at Indiana State on Tuesday, May 9. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
