
Ball State Drops Game Two to Kent State

With the loss, Ball State fell to 33-20 overall and 19-10 in MAC play. Kent State won the regular season title as the moved to 39-14 overall and 23-6 in league play.
After a scoreless first inning, Scheffler led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot to center field. The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Golden Flashes scored six runs on five home runs and took a 6-1 lead into the fourth inning. Kent State added five runs in the top of the fourth on three hits. KSU held an 11-1 lead after four innings of play. A throwing error in the top of the fifth led to another run for the Golden Flashes as they extended their lead to 12-1. Kent State produced two more runs in the top of the sixth on one hit. Kent took a 14-1 lead into the seventh inning.
Grego led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer to left field. Two batters later, Hinds belted his first home run of the season with a solo shot to left. The Cardinals cut the deficit to 14-3 after eight.
Ty Weatherly got the start on the mound for BSU and went three innings. He gave up six earned runs and struck out four batters. He fell to 2-4 on the year. Tanner Knapp added two innings of relief with two strikeouts. He surrendered eight runs, seven earned, on five hits. Sam Klein tossed four innings of shutout baseball with four strikeouts.
Joe Whiteman started on the hill for the Golden Flashes and picked up the win as he moved to 9-1 on the season. He struck out five batters in five innings of work. He gave up one earned run. Calvin Bickerstaff went 2 1/3 innings of relief and struck out three. He surrendered two earned runs on three hits. Jordan Kolenda closed out the game with 1 2/3 innings in relief. He had three strikeouts.
Ball State and Kent State close out the series on Saturday as part of Senior Day and First Merchants Fan Day. Senior Day will begin at 12:45 p.m. with first pitch coming at 1:03 p.m.
