
Scheffler, Tellier Hit Homers as Cardinals Fly High Over RedHawks

With the victory, Ball State improved to 32-18 overall and 19-8 in MAC play, while Miami fell to 19-34 overall and 13-17 in conference action.
Scheffler led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to right center. BSU took a 1-0 lead into the third inning.

The RedHawks tied the game in the top of the third with a run on one hit.
Tellier led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field. Scheffler recorded a one-out single and moved Tellier to second. Blake Bevis reached safely on a throwing error by the pitcher as Tellier scored from second on the play. Scheffler moved to third on the play. Hunter Dobbins notched a sac fly to left field as Scheffler tagged up and scored from third. The Cardinals extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
Justin Conant led off the bottom of the fourth with a six-pitch walk. Nick Gregory dropped down a sac bunt and moved Conant to second. Tellier followed with a two-run home run to left field. Ball State took a 5-1 lead into fifth.

Miami cut the deficit to 5-2 with one run on three hits in the top of the fifth.
Dobbins led off the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Zach Lane recorded an RBI single to left center as Dobbins scored. Gregory was hit by a pitch with two outs. Tellier picked up another RBI with a single to right field as Lane scored. The Cardinals extended their lead to 7-2 after five innings.
Scheffler led off the bottom of the sixth and was hit by a pitch. Bevis reached on a base hit off the third baseman as Scheffler moved up to second. Dobbins walked and loaded the bases for BSU. Lane delivered an RBI single to left field and gave Ball State an 8-2 lead after six complete innings of play.
The RedHawks scored a run in the top of the ninth on one hit, but the Cardinals went on to claim an 8-3 victory.
Tanner Knapp got the start on the mound for BSU. He went 4 2/3 innings in a no decision. He struck out two batters and surrendered two earned runs on five hits. Sam Klein got the win in 2 1/3 innings of relief and improved to 6-2 on the year. He struck out four batters and did not give up a hit. Logan Schulfer added two innings in relief. He struck out two and surrendered one earned run on one hit.
Zach Maxey got the start for Miami and picked up the loss. He fell to 3-7 on the season. He struck out three batters and gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits. Nick Vardavas went 1 1/3 innings of relief. He had two strikeouts and surrendered four earned runs on four hits. Connor Preisel tossed two innings in relief. He struck out four batters and gave up one earned run on two hits. Carson Byers added 1 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three batters.
Ball State returns to action on Tuesday, May 16, for a road contest against Southern Indiana. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
