
Cardinals Drop Tough One to RedHawks

With the loss, Ball State fell to 30-18 overall and 17-8 in league play. Miami improved to 19-32 overall and 13-15 in the MAC.
Hunter Dobbins led off the bottom of the third with a four-pitch walk. Justin Conant drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Dobbins and Conant moved up a base on a wild pitch. Adam Tellier ripped the first pitch he saw for a single up the middle and drove in Dobbins and Conant. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.
Blake Bevis led off the bottom of the fourth and was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dobbins singled to left field and moved Bevis to third. Zach Lane lifted a pitch to deep center for a sac fly as Bevis tagged up and scored from third. BSU extended its lead to 3-0 after four innings in the book.
Tellier led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Decker Scheffler singled on a chopper through the right side and advanced Tellier to third. Tellier scored and Scheffler advanced to second on passed ball. The Cards took a 4-0 lead into the top of the sixth.
The RedHawks scored 14 runs on five hits and drew 10 walks in the top of the eighth.
The Cardinals did not go down without a fight. Tellier and Peltier started the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back walks. Scheffler followed with a single to left field and loaded the bases for BSU. Jalen Martinez drove in a run with a single to left. Matthew Rivera produced a two-RBI double to left center. Lane drew a walk and loaded the bases for the Cardinals once again. Conant notched a sac fly to center that scored Martinez from third. The Ball State comeback bid was cut short, and the Cardinals fell 14-8.
O'Donnell got the start on the mound for Ball State. He went seven innings with 11 strikeouts. He scattered two hits. Jacob Hartlaub faced one batter in the seventh and gave up an earned run. Sam Klein faced five batters and had five walks. He gave up five earned runs. He got the loss and fell to 5-2 on the season. Logan Schulfer added 2/3 of an inning of relief. He gave up eight runs, six earned, on four hits. Graham Kelham tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Connor Oliver got the start on the mound for the RedHawks. He went 5 2/3 innings. He surrendered four runs, three earned, and had five strikeouts. Lawson Blackmore picked up the win and improved to 2-1 on the season. He went 2 1/3 innings of relief with two strikeouts and surrendered three earned runs on two hits. Carson Byers closed out the game with an inning of relief. He gave up one earned run on two hits. He had one strikeout.
Ball State and Miami return to action on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
