
Cardinals Fly High with 16 Runs against Eagles

With the win, Ball State has won seven-straight games. BSU improved to 16-6 overall and 7-1 in Mid-American Conference action, while EMU fell to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in league games.
"Our boys battled the elements to win today's game," said Head Coach Rich Maloney. "So many guys contributed but Ryan Peltier and Adam Tellier starred offensively."
Adam Tellier recorded a one-out triple to give the Cardinals some momentum in the top of the first. After Peltier was hit by a pitch, Andrew Wilhite singled through the right side and scored Tellier from third. Decker Scheffler reached on an error by the pitcher, which allowed Peltier to score from third. BSU held a 2-0 lead after the first half inning of play.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first with three runs on three hits.
Hunter Dobbins led off the top of the second with a triple to right field. Justin Conant followed with a triple to right center and drove in Dobbins. Nick Gregory recorded a sac fly to right field as Conant tagged up from third. After a Tellier walk, Peltier launched a two-run blast over the left center wall. Matthew Rivera was hit by a pitch with two outs. Scheffler doubled to left center to drive in Rivera, who scored from first. Ball State took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the second.
Scheffler led off the top of the fourth with a double to right center. Blake Bevis was hit by a pitch to give BSU runners on first and second with no outs. Conant loaded the bases with a bunt single to third base. Gregory grounded out to first, but Scheffler scored from third for the RBI. The Cardinals extended their lead to 8-3 after 3.5 innings of play.
Scheffler drew a six-pitch walk to lead off the top of the sixth. Bevis recorded a ground-rule double down the left field line. Dobbins drew a walk to load the bases for the Cardinals. Scheffler scored on a wild pitch while Bevis and Dobbins moved up a base. Conant drew a walk to load the bases for Ball State once again. Gregory grounded into a double play, but Bevis was able to score from third. Tellier followed with an RBI single through the right side as Dobbins scored from third. BSU took an 11-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Eastern Michigan was able to get a run back in the bottom of the sixth on two hits. The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run by Matt Kirk.
Conant led off the top of the eighth with a single up the middle. Gregory reached base safely on a fielder's choice. Tellier followed with a double down the left field line. Peltier drove in Gregory and Tellier with a single through the right side. Peltier stole second. Casey Turturici singled through the right side and scored Peltier from second. The Cardinals took a 15-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
CJ Horn led off the top of the ninth with a single to left field. Dylan Grego drew a walk to give BSU runners on first and second with no outs. Horn and Grego moved up a base on a wild pitch. Jalen Martinez reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Horn to score from third. Zach Lane drew a walk to load the bases. Aiden Hinds followed with a walk and picked up the RBI as Grego scored. BSU took a 16-5 lead into the home half of the ninth. Brady Owens tossed a scoreless ninth to give the Cardinals the 16-5 victory.
Ty Johnson got the start and the win for the Cardinals. He improved to 3-1 on the season. He went five innings and had four strikeouts. He surrendered three earned runs on four hits. Tanner Knapp went three innings in relief. He surrendered two earned run and had one strikeout. Owens closed out the game with one inning and had two strikeouts.
Conant and Tellier led the Cardinals with three hits each. Peltier drove in a game-high four RBIs. Scheffler added a two-hit performance. Tellier and Peltier tied for a game-high three runs scored.
Nick Chittum got the start for the Eagles and picked up the loss. He fell to 1-1 on the season. He struck out one batter and gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits. Tyler Helgeson added 1 2/3 innings in relief. He surrendered one earned run on two hits with a strikeout. Joe Grassi surrendered three earned runs on two hits. He added one strikeout. Dylan Wolff added 2 1/3 innings of relief with three strikeouts. He gave up three earned runs on five hits. Grant Reising failed to record an out and gave up two runs, one earned. Gavin King went an inning in relief and struck out three batters.
Ball State and Eastern close out the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
