Reigning MAC Champs Opens League Play With Win Over WMU
March 18, 2023 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The 2022 reigning Mid-American Conference regular and tournament champions opened league play on a high note as the Cardinals took down the Western Michigan Broncos in dominating fashion.

Ball State registered a 7-0 sweep Saturday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA improving to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC while Western Michigan drops to 9-4 and 0-1 in league play.

Doubles wasn't necessarily a cake walk, as Ball State fell 6-1 to Western Michigan on the top court. Prior to that loss, the Cardinals' Amy Kaplan and Annika Planinsek paired up at the No. 2 slot and didn't lose a game versus Karin Hamilton and Audrey Smitek for the 6-0 win.

Shortly after, in a heated battle, Jessica Braun alongside Emily Desai fought their way back after being down early to WMU's No. 3 doubles tandem of Kaitlyn Rogosch and Ariane Souligny. Braun and Desai went on to take the match 6-3 and claim the doubles point.

In singles, Braun played a fast paced match on court No. 4 winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 against Smitek. Maria Polishchuk pushed the Cardinals lead to 3-0 with her 6-4, 6-1 victory versus WMU's top player Lindsey Zieglar.

Allison Mulville then clinched match point for Ball State beating Kaitlyn Rogosch on court No. 6, 6-0, 6-4.

This week's MAC singles player of the week, Kaplan pushed BSU's cushion to 5-0 after winning, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) at the No. 2 spot. Emma Peeler along with Planinsek rounded out the singles victories today for Ball State at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively.

The Ball State women's tennis team will continue MAC play at home Friday when it faces Buffalo at 1 pm ET.
