Softball Earns Friday Split With Sacred Heart
March 10, 2023 | Softball
Â
Unfortunately, the nightcap did not go the Cardinals (10-10) way as the Pioneers (6-7) capitalized on five errors for an 11-3 (5) win to snap BSU's eight-game winning streak in neutral site games.
Â
Ball State jumped on the board early in the opener, thanks to a two-run double from catcher McKayla Timmons and a two-run bomb from left fielder Kaitlyn Mathews. That was all the run support pitcher Alyssa Stramaglia would need, as she limited SHU to six hits and one run over her 7.0 innings of work. She also struck out five batters.
Â
The Cardinals would strike first in the nightcap as well, courtesy of an RBI single from right fielder McKenna Mulholland. Unfortunately, four errors in the top of the second helped Sacred Heart take control of the contest.
Â
HIGHLIGHTS
- Ball State had three two-run doubles in the opener, one from Timmons (1st inning) and two from second baseman Jazmyne Armendariz (3rd and 4th innings).
- Mathews' two-run blast in the first inning was her first home run of the season and the third of her career.
- The Cardinals picked up four more stolen bases on the day, highlighted by center fielder Remington Ross moving to 7-for-7 on the year in the nightcap.
- It was a rough evening for the Ball State defense in the nightcap, as it committed four errors in the second inning and finished the game with five … Prior to the second inning, Ball State had not committed more than three errors in a game this season.
