
Men's S&D Lead MAC Championships After Day 1

OXFORD, Ohio - - It was a record-setting day for Ball State as it opened the 2023 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships with a pair of program records.

The Cardinals started competition at the Miami Aquatic Center with a splash, taking first in the 200 medley relay and setting a new program record with a finish at 1:26.35.

Senior Joey Garberick led the way for the Cardinals finishing over a second faster than the next closest breaststroke swimmer (23.10). Sophomore Ethan Pheifer was the first in the pool for BSU and seniors Bryce Handshoe and Owen Chaye brought it home.

It was Ball State's first MAC relay title since the winning the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay in 1996. In addition, it is just the seventh overall relay title in program history and the fourth in the 200 medley relay (1993, 1995, 1996, 2023).

Ball State made it two-for-two on record performances in the 800 freestyle relay, touching at 6:37.50. Chaye took part in his second record of the night and was joined by freshman Jacob Siewers, sophomore Michael Mitsynskyy, and senior Aiden Maurer.

After two events, the Cardinals are currently leading the seven-team field with 70 points thanks to their first and fourth place relay finishes. Missouri State and Miami are both tied for second at 66.

Wednesday was a short night for MAC swimmers, as just the two relays were in action. Competition picks up Thursday, with three individual swimming events, 1-meter diving, and the 200 freestyle relay.
