Women’s Tennis Loses 4-3 Heartbreaker to James Madison
February 03, 2023 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team (2-2) dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 match to James Madison (4-1) Friday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA.
The Cardinals found themselves in unfamiliar territory to start the match after dropping the doubles point to the Dukes.
Ball State fought its way back into the match quickly in singles quickly taking a 2-1 lead over James Madison. This week's Mid-American Conference singles player of the week, Amy Kaplan, exited off court No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 take down against Ines Oliveira. Shortly after, Maria Polishchuk found herself down in the second frame but came back to beat Daria Afanasyeva, 6-1, 7-6 (5) at position No. 2.
The remaining four singles courts were all in nail biter situations with three of the four in their third sets. James Madison went back up 3-2 with wins on courts four and one.
The match would come down to positions five and six with Ball State needing both to take the match. Elena Malykh knotted the score 3-3 after her 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory over Reka Marko. But despite the Cardinals efforts, James Madison unfortunately took the three-set thriller on court No. 5 to seal the win for the Dukes.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues spring action when it heads to Cleveland State Friday, Feb. 10 for a 4 pm ET first serve.
