Women's S&D Travels To Miami For MAC Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. - - After months of preparation, the Ball State women's swimming & diving program will put all its hard work to the test this week at the Miami Aquatic Center for the 2023 Mid-American Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.

Action in the four-day meet begins Wednesday (Feb. 22) with a pair of relay swims. Individual action gets underway Thursday (Feb. 23) and will run through Saturday (Feb. 25).

The Cardinals have steadily improved under head coach J. Agnew, including turning in the two best teams scores since the 2014 season at the past two MAC Championships.
AT THE 2022 MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Ball State finished the 2022 MAC Championships with five program records and 12 other individual times which broke into the top seven on BSU's all-time list. The Cardinals earned 243.5 total points to place seventh among the eight-team field.

The Cardinals set a pair of program records on the first day of the competition, starting with Shelby Crist, Alex Bader, Hannah Jones, and Apsara Sakbun combining for a time of 1:40.01 in the 200 medley relay.

Later in the opening day, Gracey Payne, Marcella Ribeiro, Mary Kate Phillips, and A. Sakbun combined for a program record time of 7:23.86 in the 800 freestyle relay, knocking exactly three seconds off the previous mark of 7:26.86 set at the 2012 MAC Championships.

The second day of the competition saw a third program record, as Jones, A. Sakbun, Alexa McDonald, and Payne combined for a time of 1:32.09 in the 200 freestyle relay. The effort was nearly a second off the previous record of 1:32.88 set at the 2020 MAC Championships.

Day three's program record came in the preliminary round, with Jones clocking a time of 54.44 in the 100 backstroke. She would go on to finish eighth in both the 100 butterfly (54.29) and 100 backstroke (54.55) that day, while claiming BSU's only individual program record during the meet.

The third day also saw Bader place fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.69 to tie the second-best individual effort in program history. It was also Ball State's best individual finish over the four-day competition.

Ball State would go on to close the meet the way it started, as Payne, Alexa McDonald, A. Sakbun, and Jones combined for a program record time of 3:22.31 in the 400 freestyle.

IN THE MAC RANKINS – WOMEN:
Entering the MAC Championships the Cardinals have eight student-athletes ranked in scoring position in their respective events as compiled by CollegeSwimming.com.

Junior Marcella Ribeiro, who holds program records in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle, is BSU's top-ranked swimmer, holding fifth in the 500 (4:54.87) and 1650 freestyle (17:01.74)

SO FAR THIS SEASON:
Ball State boasts two of the top divers in the league in sophomore Ashleigh Provan and freshman Maddy Hischer. Both divers have already locked up spots in the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships which will be held March 9-11 in Bloomington, Ind.

Hischer tallied her NCAA Zone Diving cuts versus Anderson (Jan. 28) with a score of 279.68 on 1M and 307.20 on 3M. Provan also achieved her 3M versus Anderson with a score of 301.95. The week prior versus Miami (Jan. 21), Provan qualified on the 1M with her performance of 274.73.
Overall, Ball State's women have claimed 57 individual victories and nine relay wins this season. Junior Marcella Ribeiro leads the way with 11 overall wins, while sophomore Hannah Jones and freshman Payton Kelly are tied for second on the squad with eight apiece.
