Senior cards 4-under 66 in final round to pace Ball State at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State golfer Joey Wiseman shot a career-low round of 4-under (66) to earn co-medalist honors at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational Saturday. The senior ended the tournament at 2-under (71-71-66--208) and shared the award with Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen, who won on a four-hole playoff.
The Cardinals shot 19-over for the weekend (859) and finished second to Wright State (846) at the par-70 Delaware Country Club.
"We were close with about eight holes to play and closed the gap, but unfortunately, it didn't go our way," head coach Mike Fleck said. "We'll analyze it and break it down, but today is about celebrating Joey Wiseman with a career-low final round and co-medaling. We're going to celebrate the victory of him playing really well. We certainly have some things we need to work on to get ready for a quick turnaround for our next tournament."
The highlight of the day for Wiseman came when he carded an eagle on back-to-back holes - No. 3 and No. 4 - and then followed it up with a birdie on the par-4 No. 5. In total, Wiseman had eight birdies and two eagles in his first tournament of the season.
Ball State had three other top-15 finishers in Griffin Hare (eighth), Joey Ranieri (12th) and Kash Bellar (15th). The trio combined for six birdies and two eagles in their final circuits of the weekend. Hare finished at 6-over (70-72-74--216), while Ranieri competed his three-round tour at 7-over (72-67-78--217) and Bellar at 8-over (69-73-76--218).
Rounding out the lineup, Ali Khan finished in a tie for 60th at 18-over (75-75-78--228).
The Cardinals had five competing individuals in their home tournament, led by Drew Todd, who tied for 38th at 12-over (73-75-74--222).
Competing in his first event for Ball State, Carter Smith tied for 48th at 14-over (76-73-75--224), while Carson Orr was two shots back at 16-over (76-76-74--226) and tied for 55th.
Evan Bone tied for 70th at 21-over (79-77-75--231) and Colin Nasser tied for 77th at 25-over (81-80-74--235).
The Cardinals return to action Sept. 12-13 for the Streamsong Invitational in Bowling Green, Fla.
