Ball State Battles Miami to Draw in MAC Opener
September 22, 2022 | Soccer
OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State soccer team made the trip to Oxford, Ohio, for the Mid-American Conference opener against Miami. The Cardinals scored their fastest goal of the season as the first goal came 26 seconds into the match. Delaney Caldwell and Avery Fenchel each found the back of the net as the Cardinals and RedHawks ended in a 2-2 draw on Thursday.
Ball State is 1-3-4 and 0-0-1 in MAC play on the season, while Miami is 4-2-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in the conference.
"It was a tough MAC conference game today," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "It was great to get off to a good start and score some quality goals. Frustrating to give up the goals we did, knowing Miami has done really well this season on set pieces and it was a focus for us. Looking at the big picture, to get a tough point on the road is never bad and we did that."
Acadia Murphy played a ball from around midfield towards the box. Caldwell outran the Miami defender and collected the ball just outside the box. She ripped a shot from just inside the box and beat the keeper to the far post just 26 seconds into the match.
In the fifth minute, Abby Elgert dribbled the ball down the endline into the box. After she beat a defender, she placed the ball on the foot of Fenchel, who chipped it by the goalkeeper and inside the near post. Fenchel has scored a goal in three-straight matches.
Miami was able to find the back of the net off a free kick in the 27th minute by Camber Hayes. The match went to the break, 2-1, in favor of the Cardinals.
The RedHawks found the equalizer on another free kick. Hayes sent a ball into the box for Norah Roush for the header.
In the 81st minute, Miami added some pressure inside the box. Bethany Moser came up with a great save to keep a shot out from five yards out. She gathered herself and made a second stop on a rebounded shot attempt. Her back-to-back stops kept the game knotted at 2-2.
Fenchel notched her fifth goal of the year and Caldwell collected her second. Murphy picked up her first collegiate point with her assist and Elgert tallied her first assist of the season.
Moser finished the match with seven saves and is now 1-3-4 in net for Ball State. Her counterpart, Izzie Vaccari, made four stops and is 4-2-2 on the year for Miami.
Ball State returns to the friendly confines of the Briner Sports Complex for a MAC matchup with Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 25. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be on ESPN+/3.
