Cardinals finish sixth, ahead of major conference foes
CINCINNATI, Ohio – In the final round of the Bearcat Invitational Tuesday, the Ball State men's golf team moved up the leaderboard and placed sixth at 9-over (281-293-287--861).
The Cardinals, who were just one shot back of Memphis, finished ahead of major conference foes Iowa and Kentucky, in addition to Sam Houston State, which was a recent NCAA Championship finalist.
"We battled this week and got head-to-head wins over teams from the Big Ten, SEC and an NCAA finalist from a year ago," head coach Mike Fleck said. "I'm proud of this group's effort as we look to build on this momentum to finish out the fall."
Ball State was led by Joey Ranieri, who finished sixth at 4-under (66-73-70--209). The senior totaled three birdies on the day and finished the final 10 holes of his round 1-under without a bogey.
Griffin Hare and Ali Khan were next in line as they tied for 30th and 33rd, respectively. Hare finished at 4-over (72-76-69--217), while Khan ended at 5-over (68-73-77--218). The duo combined for five birdies on the day, while Hare added an eagle on the 559-yard, par-5 No. 4 hole.
Kash Bellar (T-64th) and Joey Wiseman (69th) rounded out the lineup at 12-over (79-71-75--225) and 13-over (75-78-73--226), respectively.
Cincinnati won its home tournament at 7-under (845), followed by UNCG (846) and Louisville (847).
After three consecutive weeks of action, the Cardinals return to the course Oct. 10-11 for the Purdue Fall Invitational.
"It's been a busy stretch having three events in a row," Fleck added. "When we get home, we'll be able to keep the guys competitive, look at some numbers, analyze and refresh."
