Cardinals Open MAC Play with Victory Over Longwood

MUNCIE, Ind. The Ball State field hockey returned to the Briner Sports Complex for the Mid-American Conference opener against Longwood on Friday. Fleur Knopert led the Cardinals with two goals in the BSU 3-2 victory.
The Cardinals' record improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while Longwood fell 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the first quarter when Knopert notched her first goal of the game with an assist from Angel Nkosi.
Longwood evened the score in the second quarter after converting a penalty stroke in the 11th minute.
The Cardinals regained the lead in the 13th minute of the third quarter when Knopert netted her second goal of the game and her team-leading fourth of the season. Longwood responded with the equalizer with 30 seconds to play in the third quarter making it 2-2 heading into the last 15 minutes.
After battling hard for a majority of the fourth quarter, Rachel Bohn gave Ball State the lead with an assist from Knopert with less than three minutes remaining in the game. The Cardinals held onto the 3-2 lead for the remaining two minutes giving them their first conference victory of the season.
Longwood's Lara Van Nunen notched six saves, including a save on a penalty stroke from the Cardinals in the first quarter.
Ally Butler secured the win in goal for the Cardinals with five saves as well as a strong performance by Ball State's defense.
The Cardinals will look to extend their conference record to 2-0 next Friday, Sept. 23. Ball State travels to Kent State for the second MAC contest of the season.
