The Cardinals Come Back from 2-0 Hole and Force a Draw
September 15, 2022 | Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS – The Ball State soccer team traveled south on I-69 for a Thursday contest at Butler. The Bulldogs scored early to start both halves, but the Cardinals battled back to tie the match. Avery Fenchel and Sammi Corcoran each scored a goal for BSU.
BSU moved to 1-3-3, while BU is 3-4-1 on the season.
"It was a really gritty performance today," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "To be down 2-0 and fight our way back says a lot about where this group has come from day one. This should help us as we prepare for conference play, where every game is a battle."
Katie Soderstrom put Butler on top 1-0 in the fifth minute on a goal that snuck inside the near post.
In the 19th minute, Jenna Dombrowski put a ball on target that beat the Butler keeper, but a BU defender was there to make the team save and keep Ball State off the board.
The Cardinals and Bulldogs each added a shot on goal, but the match remained 1-0 in favor of Butler.
Like the first half, BU started fast and scored a goal by Abigail Isger that was assisted by Soderstrom within the first minute in the second half.
Fenchel pulled the Cardinals within one in the 49th minute as she took her own rebound to beat the keeper to the top-right corner. Fenchel picked up her fourth goal of the season.
Lexi Fraley nearly tied the match in the 70th minute as she dribbled by the defender and beat the BU keeper, but the shot missed just right of the post. It was the best scoring chance since the Cardinal goal.
In the 76th minute, Corcoran found the back of the net as she blasted it by the keeper to the upper, near post, for the equalizer. Corcoran scored her first goal of the season.
Bethany Moser finished the match with four saves, while her counterpart, Anna Pierce stopped two shots.
Ball State returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 22, as Mid-American Conference play begins. The Cardinals and the Miami RedHawks faceoff from Oxford, Ohio. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
