Hilton’s Overtime Winner Lifts Cardinals Over Billikens
September 11, 2022 | Field Hockey
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Ball State field hockey (3-2) secured its third win of the season at Saint Louis (1-5) Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime thriller after Emma Hilton scored the game-winner off the assist from Fleur Knopert.
"It wasn't our best performance, but I'm proud of the team for battling and coming out on top," Ball State head field hockey coach Caitlin Walsh said. "We now have a big week ahead as we prepare for conference play."
Just eight minutes in, Hilton took an advantage of a penalty corner in the first quarter to grab the lead for the Cardinals. Staunch defense held the Billikens scoreless for the entire first half of play. However, Saint Louis was able to find an equalizer late in the third quarter.
Although, both teams were very competitive throughout the remainder of regulation, Saint Louis had three penalty corner attempts that Ball State was able to fend off in the final period thus sending the contest into overtime.
The Cardinals were able to take offensive control early on in extra period making it to the scoring circle with only two minutes shaved off the clock. At the 2:11 mark, Knopert found Hilton for the goal that would propel Ball State past Saint Louis today.
Hannah Johnston started in goal for Ball State against Saint Louis, but Ally Butler came into the game for the second half of play. Johnston was officially credited with the win. Butler led all goalies with five saves.
The Ball State field hockey team returns home and will open Mid-American Conference action against Longwood, Friday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. ET. The Cardinals will also pay tribute prior to the contest to the 1994 Ball State Field Hockey Team which will be inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame later that evening.
