Ball State Falls In I-69 Battle with Purdue Fort Wayne
September 01, 2022 | Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team made the short trip up I-69 for a Thursday match at Purdue Fort Wayne. The Mastodons improved to 2-1-2 on the season as the Cardinals fell to 0-3-2 on the season after Purdue Fort Wayne claimed a 1-0 victory.
Kelsey Gallagher put the Mastodons on the board first in the 10th minute of play.
The Cardinals answered shortly after when Abby Elgert put a well-placed shot to the lower right corner of the goal, but the PFW keeper made the save. Lexy Smith put a ball on frame in the 16th minute but was unable to sneak it by the Mastodon goalkeeper.
Bethany Moser settled down as the half progressed and made two saves to close out the half.
Purdue Fort Wayne got a shot on target in the 49th minute, but Moser was there to make the save.
The Cardinals' lone chance in the second half came off the foot of Smith, who nearly put one in from long range.
Smith and Elgert led the team, as they each produced two shots on goal, while Fraser added one shot on frame. Moser finished the contest with three saves.
Samantha Castaneda finished the match with five saves for the Mastodons.
"We're a talented group," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "When we don't come with the right mentality and effort it's hard to win. We continue to see an unfortunate trend of inconsistency with our play. Credit to Purdue Fort Wayne for putting together a complete effort. We have to figure out who we want to be as a team and if we want to continue to be inconsistent or if we want to bring the right effort and mentality every day."
Ball State returns to the friendly confines of the Briner Sports Complex as Valparaiso comes to town. Prior to the 1 p.m. start, the Cardinals will recognize Tiffani Torres for Senior Day on Sunday, Sept. 4.
