Cardinals Soar Over Beacons on Senior Day

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team returned to the Briner Sports Complex on Sunday as Valparaiso came to town. Avery Fenchel powered the Cardinals over the Beacons with two goals in the BSU 3-0 win.
The Cardinals picked up their first win of the season and improved to 1-3-2 on the season, while the Beacons fell to 1-3-2 on the year.
Valpo recorded the first shot of the match, but it was wide.
Fenchel recorded her second goal of the season in the 10th minute when she blasted a shot off the cross bar that bounced off the keepers back and into the goal.
Valpo recorded the next two shots on goal of the match in the 12th and 30th minutes, but Bethany Moser made the saves. Delaney Caldwell ended the half with a shot on goal. Ball State took a 1-0 lead into the half.
In the 47th minute, Fenchel made a great defensive play in the BSU attacking zone. She dribbled into the box and beat the keeper to the far post. She tallied her third goal of the season and extended the Cardinal lead to 2-0.
Emily Roper sent a well-placed ball towards the box for Caldwell in the 76th minute. Caldwell was able to beat the defender to the ball and ripped a shot by the keeper to the far post. Caldwell earned her first collegiate goal, while Roper picked up her first career point with the assist.
Moser finished the match with three saves and improved to 1-3-2 on the season. Her counterpart, Nikki Coryell, finished with three saves as well.
As a team, BSU put six shots on goal opposed to the three shots on goal by Valpo.
The Cardinals have a little over a week off before the next contest. Ball State makes the trip down I-69 for a meeting with Butler on Thursday, Sept. 15. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
