Cardinals Take on Mastodons, Beacons

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team will be back in action for two games this week. The Cardinals begin the week on Thursday with a road trip to Purdue Fort Wayne, followed by a home contest against Valparaiso on Sunday. BSU will recognize its lone senior, Tiffani Torres, for Senior Day prior to Sunday's match.
The Cardinals are coming off an 0-1-1 week that saw BSU notch its first goals of the season. Ball State is 0-2-2 on the season. Avery Fenchel scored the first goal of the season and Lexi Fraley added a goal on a penalty kick. Fenchel and Fraley are tied for the team lead with four shots on goal, while Maria Broering, Delaney Caldwell, and Jenna Dombrowski are tied with two shots on goal each. Bethany Moser has started all four matches in goal for the Cardinals and has 16 saves on the season, which is fourth in the Mid-American Conference.
The Cardinals and Mastodons are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time on Thursday, Sept. 1. This will be the 18th meeting between the two squads. Ball State holds a 15-1-1 mark against Purdue Fort Wayne. BSU has won seven-straight matchups, including a 3-1 victory last season. The Cardinals are 5-1-1 in matches played in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons' lone victory in the series came at home on Aug. 30, 2013.
Purdue Fort Wayne has started the same 11 for all four matches and enters Thursday with an overall record of 1-1-2. Mackenzie Evans paces the team with three goals, while Kelsey Gallagher, Marisa Metzger, and Gigi Ricciardi have each scored one goal. Rylee Vruggink leads the team with two assists. Samantha Castaneda has started all four matches in goal for the Mastodons and has tallied 18 saves and surrendered five goals.
Valparaiso and Ball State have met six times, with the Beacons holding a 4-2-0 edge. The series is tied 1-1-0 in contests played in Muncie. The Cardinals won the last meeting 3-1 last season. Sunday's contest is slated for a 1 p.m. first touch.
Valparaiso has a 1-1-2 overall record. Kiley Dugan and Dana Fish lead the Beacons with one goal each. Kelsie James and Allie Anderson have provided one assist each. Nikki Coryell has started all four matches in net for Valparaiso and has made 14 saves with two shutouts.
