Ball State Drops Season Opener at Kentucky
August 18, 2022 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ball State soccer team opened the 2022 season on the road against Kentucky from the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex Thursday. Bethany Moser made a career-high nine saves.
Moser tallied the most saves by a Ball State keeper since Tristan Stuteville stopped 14 shots against Buffalo on Oct. 24 of 2019.
Kentucky recorded the first shot on goal of the match in the eighth minute, but Moser made a great stop to keep it scoreless.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first at the 15-minute mark in the first half. Hannah Richardson ripped a ball on frame from inside the box, but Moser was up to the challenge and made an outstanding save. Hadley Williams collected the rebound and put a shot on goal. Lexy Smith put forth a stellar effort to try and keep the shot out of the net, but the Williams' shot squeaked inside the far post for a Wildcat goal.
Kentucky notched the first shot of the second half in the first minute of play, but like previous shots, Moser came up with a big save.
Madison Jones put the Wildcats up 2-0 in the 65th minute.
Lexi Fraley produced the Cardinals' first shot of the game in the 66th minute but missed just over the crossbar.
Jordyn Rhodes gave Kentucky a 3-0 lead in the 69th minute.
Delaney Caldwell posted the Cardinals' second shot of the match in the 74th minute as her shot went wide right.
Ball State returns to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. from Charlotte, North Carolina. The Cardinals take on the Royals of Queens in the second match of the season.
"It's not the result we were hoping for tonigh," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "Kentucky did a good job of making things difficult for us and we struggled to find a good rhythm. We needed to be better in critical moments inside both 18's."
