Ball State Earns Spot in MAC Championship with Win Over Central Michigan

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team battled Central Michigan in the winner's bracket of the Mid-American Conference Championship on Friday from Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex. Tyler Schweitzer was lights out and showed why he was named MAC Pitcher of the Year by allowing just two runs over eight innings as the Cardinals defeated the Chippewas 9-7.
Schweitzer threw a career-high 143 pitches during his time on the mound, while striking out nine batters and limiting CMU to just six hits. He improved to 11-2 on the season with the win.
Amir Wright, who was 2-for-3 with one run scored, has reached safely in 55 of the 57 games this season. Nick Powell and Ryan Peltier both extended their streak of reaching safely to 20 and 17 games, respectively. Peltier has produced a hit in 12-straight games.
Hunter Dobbins led the Cardinals with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a game-high three runs scored. Adam Tellier, Peltier, and Wright all produced two hits each.
The Chippewas jumped out to an early 1-0 in the top of the first on a Jakob Marsee home run to right field.
Dobbins led off the bottom of the second with a single to right field. Tellier notched a one-out double to right center and gave Ball State runners on second and third with one out. Peltier tied the game with an RBI single to left field that scored Dobbins. The game was tied as it went to the top of the third.
Central Michigan regained a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a Danny Wuestenfeld picked up a sac fly to right field.
Powell started a Ball State rally with a two-out walk in the bottom of the third. Dobbins and Zach Cole both drew walks to load the bases for Tellier. Tellier came up big for the Cardinals with a single to left center that scored Powell and Dobbins. BSU took a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning.
Powell led off the bottom of the fifth with a single up the middle. Dobbins moved Powell to third with a single to right field. Cole delivered a double to left center that plated Powell and Dobbins. Tellier dropped down a sac bunt to move Cole to third with one out. Peltier gave the Cardinals two more runs with a homer to straight-away center. The Cardinals took a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning.
Justin Conant led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center. Wright followed with a walk to give BSU runners on first and second. Trenton Quartermaine lined a clutch double down the right field line that extended the Cardinals lead to 9-2.
The Chippewas did not go down without a fight, as they clawed back with five runs on three hits in the top of the ninth. The Cardinals used Sam Klein to close out the game 9-7.
Klein gave Ball State an inning of relief with three strikeouts. He surrendered one earned run.
Jordan Patty got the start for CMU and went four innings in the loss. He fell to 6-5 on the season. He struck out six and gave up six earned runs. Ryan Insco went 1 2/3 innings in relief with two strikeouts and surrendered gave up one earned run. Jake Jones added 1 1/3 without giving up a hit. Aaron Husson went 1/3 of an inning and game up two earned runs. Michael Conte added 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout.
The Cardinals secured a spot in the MAC Championship on Saturday. Ball State will play the winner of the Central Michigan and Toledo who open the day in the elimination game at 10:30 a.m.
BSU and the winner of CMU and UT are scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
