Cardinals Host Bobcats, Chippewas, Rockets for MAC Tournament

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team returns to the friendly confines of the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for the 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Cardinals earned the opportunity to host the MAC Tournament after winning the regular season title.
Toledo and Central Michigan will get the tournament started on Wednesday, May 25, with game one of the day at 10:30 a.m. The Cardinals and Bobcats are scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.

Ball State is coming off a sweep of Miami to conclude the regular season. The Cardinals enter with an overall record of 38-17 and finished 32-7 in MAC play and are the No. 1 seed. Central Michigan, the No. 2 seed, enters the week with a 38-16 overall record with a 30-7 conference mark. The No. 3 seed Toledo Rockets have an overall record of 32-23 and posted a 23-16 conference record. Ohio is the No. 4 seed and enters with a 29-22 overall mark with a 21-15 MAC record.
Ball State History in the MAC Tournament
Ball State enters the week with a 31-39 record in MAC tournaments. The Cardinals are 1-6 against Ohio in MAC tournaments. Ball State and Toledo have met three times in the MAC tournament with BSU winning two of the three matchups. BSU and CMU have met nine times in the MAC tournament with the Cardinals having a 4-5 mark against the Chippewas.
"CY" Schweitzer
Tyler Schweitzer was named the MAC Pitcher of the Year and he also collected an All-MAC First Team accolade in the process. This is the sixth time that Ball State has won MAC Pitcher of the Year recognition. During the season, he was a three-time MAC Pitcher of the Week honoree. He is tied for second in the NCAA with 10 wins. He leads the MAC in overall wins and leads the MAC in conference-only wins with nine. He is third in the conference with 102 strikeouts and tied for 26th in the NCAA. He is second in MAC games with a 1.96 ERA and third overall with a 2.27 ERA. He ranks third in opponent batting average in both MAC games with a .192 and overall with a .199. He is expected to get the start against Ohio.
Fresh Prince of Pel-Tee-Air
Ryan Peltier earned MAC Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-MAC Second Team for back-to-back seasons. It is the third-straight year that a Ball State player has won the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. He has been a highlight machine for the Cardinals at third base. He has made numerous difficult plays look routine throughout the season and has a team-high 91 assists. Offensively, he leads the team with 19 doubles. He has added 47 runs scored, 39 RBIs, seven home runs, and two triples.
What Can Brown Do for You?
Ryan Brown was named the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year and was an All-MAC Second Team selection. He is the third pitcher to win MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He had a stellar first season in Muncie and currently has 56 strikeouts. He enters the weekend with a 4-2 record in 39 2/3 innings. He is holding opponent hitters to a .168 batting average and has an ERA of 2.50. In MAC only contests, he has an ERA of 1.71 and has held opponents to a .160 average.
Maloney Magic
Rich Maloney won his 900th game as a head coach at NIU earlier this season. He moved his win total to 915 after a series sweep at Miami. He is currently ranked 16th among active NCAA DI coaches. He is currently ranked 120th in all-time wins across all divisions. He is 83rd among NCAA DI coaches all-time.
Triple "Cole"mination
Zach Cole was named to the All-MAC First Team as an outfielder. He leads the NCAA with nine triples and set a new BSU single season record in the process. He is a two-time MAC Player of the Week. He leads the MAC with a .728 slugging percentage, on-base percentage plus slugging percentage of 1.172, is third in the conference with a .400 batting average in conference only games and fifth with an overall batting average of .361 and he is fourth in the conference in on-base percentage for conference games with a .483. He is fifth in conference game home runs with 11 and sixth in overall home runs with 12.
The Wright Stuff
Earlier this season, Amir Wright earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. He was named to the All-MAC Second Team. He leads the MAC as the toughest to strikeout and is tied for 13th in the NCAA with a 14.9, he has only struck out 14 times in 209 at bats. He has reached safely in 53 of 55 games this season and produced two streaks of 26-straight games of reaching safely. He is tied for second in the MAC in overall triples with six and tied for third in conference only games with four. He is third in MAC games in hits with 55 and third in overall hits with 73. He is seventh in overall batting average of .349 and 10th in conference only games with a .367. He is sixth in overall walks. He has produced a fielding percentage of 1.000.
Trenton Trots
Trenton Quartermaine earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team at first base. He was a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week. He leads the MAC in RBIs with 63 overall and 53 in conference games. He reached safely in 28-consecutive games this season. He is fourth in overall home runs with 14 and 11th in conference only home runs with nine. He is eighth in the conference in overall walks with 31. He is fifth in overall putouts with 337 and ninth in the conference in putouts with 244.
Power Bats
The Cardinal offense features 12 guys that have combined for 66 home runs. BSU is tied for 73rd in the NCAA in home runs and is third in the MAC. The team has produced 362 RBIs and has produced 398 runs.
Kloser Klein
Sam Klein earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team as a relief pitcher, which is his first all-conference nod. He was a two-time MAC Pitcher of the Week selection. He is tied for 15th in the NCAA with 11 saves. He leads the MAC in saves for overall and conference only games. He has 40 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings of work. He has an ERA of 1.45 in MAC games and is holding MAC hitters to a .103 batting average. He has an overall record of 3-2.
"Magic" Johnson
Ty Johnson was named to the All-MAC Second Team. He has a 7-3 record. Johnson has tallied 70 strikeouts in 70 innings of work with an ERA of 5.14 and a WHIP of 1.16. He has held opponents to a .226 batting average.
Solid Staff
The Cardinal pitching staff is fifth in the NCAA with 7.39 hits allowed per nine innings, which leads the MAC. The Ball State pitching staff is tied for 12th in the NCAA and leads the MAC in strikeouts per nine innings with 10.6.
Cardinals vs. Bobcats: The Series
Ohio enters the weekend with a 68-56 series lead against Ball State. The Cardinals are 30-30 at home against the Bobcats. The two squads split the four-game series earlier this season. BSU is 18-23 against Ohio under Coach Maloney.

Ohio is led by Colin Kasperbauer, Mason Minzey, and Edward Kutt IV as all three earned a spot on an All-MAC Team. Kasperbauer leads the team with a .389 batting average and has a team-high 70 hits. He has scored 49 runs, notched 48 RBIs, has 18 doubles, four triples, and has hit three home runs. Minzey has a .304 batting average with a team-high 50 RBIs and team-best 20 doubles. He has scored 44 runs with eight home runs and a triple. Kutt IV is expected to get the start on the mound against the Cardinals. He leads the Bobcats with 80 innings pitched. He has tallied a team-high 79 strikeouts. He enters the tournament with a 5-4 record and an ERA of 5.18. Isaiah Peterson and AJ Rausch are both hitting over .300 for Ohio as they are hitting .342 and .317, respectively.
