Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader, Secure Series Victory Over Chippewas

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team returned to the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for a doubleheader with Central Michigan on Saturday. The Cardinals secured a series win against the Chippewas with a 6-4 victory in game one and a 10-7 win in game two.
Hunter Dobbins led BSU with a 6-for-8 day at the plate. Seven Cardinals recorded a multiple-hit day across the two games. Zach Lane, Trenton Quartermaine, Dobbins, and Zach Cole all launched a home run.
Amir Wright has reached safely in 41 of 42 games this season and extended his current steak to 15 games. Quartermaine has reached safely in 18-straight contests.
Cole belted his NCAA-leading seventh triple in game two.
The Cardinals' pitching was sharp and racked up a combined 18 strikeouts between the two contests.
Ball State improved to 28-14 overall and 22-4 in the MAC, while Central Michigan fell to 28-13 overall and 21-4 in league play.
Game One – Ball State 6, Central Michigan 4
The Chippewas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer by Justin Simpson.
Quartermaine singled to center with one out to get momentum started for the Cardinals. Nick Powell reached on a fielder's choice as Quartermaine was out at second. Dobbins ripped a single to the outfield and advanced to second on the throw as the CMU outfielder was unable to throw Powell out at the plate. Cole tied the game on a single through the left side that scored Dobbins. The game was tied 2-2 after one inning.
Powell recorded an infield single with one out to start things in the bottom of the third and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dobbins struck out, but a dropped third strike caused the catcher to throw to first for the out and allowed Powell to advance to third. Powell eventually scored on a wild pitch and gave BSU a 3-2 lead as the game went to the fourth.
A leadoff walk and a triple tied the game for CMU in the top of the fourth. Robby Morgan hit a solo homer to left to put the Chippewas back on top, 4-3.
Powell started the bottom of the fifth with a triple down the left field line. Dobbins tied the game with a single to right field. The Cardinals stranded the bases loaded, but were able to send the game to the sixth inning tied.
The game, originally scheduled for seven innings, needed extra innings to determine a winner. CJ Horn posted a one-out double to left field to put the go-ahead run in scoring position for Ball State. Lane got his pitch in a 1-1 count and lined a missile to left field to give the Cardinals a walk-off victory, 6-4.
Trennor O'Donnell got the start in game one and went 3 1/3 innings in a no decision. He struck out one batter and surrendered three earned runs on four hits. Ryan Brown picked up the victory and improved to 2-2 on the year with 4 2/3 innings of relief. He produced seven strikeouts and surrendered just one earned run on two hits.
Garrett Navarra went four innings in the start for CMU. He collected four strikeouts and gave up four earned runs on nine hits. Jordan Patty fell to 4-3 on the season with 3 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out five and surrendered two earned runs on three hits.
Game Two – Ball State 10, Central Michigan 7
Like the first game, the Chippewas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Wright led off the top of the first for the Cardinals with an eight-pitch walk. Powell reached on a fielder's choice to second as Wright was out at second. Dobbins doubled down the left field line and drove in Powell to cut the deficit to 2-1 after one inning.
Mario Camilletti led off the top of the third with a solo home run to left field and extended the CMU lead to 3-1.
Wright produced a one-out single to second and advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher. Quartermaine belted a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left center to tie the game at 3-3.
Two walks with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning put Central Michigan back on top 5-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ball State scored a run as Quartermaine was walked with the bases loaded to score Ryan Peltier. The Cardinals trailed 5-4 after four innings in the books.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dobbins led off the inning with a solo homer to left field to tie the game at 5-5. Cole matched Dobbins and provided the Cardinals with back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to right. Ball State held a 6-5 lead as the game went to the top of the sixth.
Central Michigan scored two runs in the top of the sixth on two hits and an error. The Chippewas held a 7-6 lead as the game entered the home half.
Wright drew a one-out walk to start the bottom of the sixth. Quartermaine singled to right, but Wright was thrown out at third on the play. Powell followed with a single to give the Cardinals runners on first and second with two outs. Dobbins was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cole came up huge as he cleared the bases with his NCAA-leading seventh triple of the season and gave the Cardinals a 9-7 lead with two outs. Cole gave BSU another insurance run as he scored on a wild pitch to put Ball State on top as the game went to the seventh inning.
Sam Klein came into the game for the Cardinals and went three up, three down as he picked up his ninth save of the season and secured a 10-7 victory for BSU.
Ty Johnson got the start on the mound for Ball State in game two. He got a no decision with 3 1/3 innings of work. He struck out five batters and surrendered five earned runs on three hits. Nate Dohm recorded the win and improved to 2-1 on the season in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Dohm notched four strikeouts and gave up two unearned runs. Klein pitched a perfect inning in relief and posted his ninth save of the season.
Logan Buczkowski got the ball in game two for CMU and picked up a no decision in 3 1/3 innings of work with four earned runs on five hits. Ryan Insco added 1 2/3 innings of relief with two earned runs on three hits. Ryan Palmbald recorded the loss in one inning of relief as he surrendered four earned runs on three hits. Each of the Central Michigan pitchers tallied two strikeouts for the game.
The Cardinals and Chippewas return to action on Sunday for the final game of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
