April 29, 2022 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State softball team opened senior weekend with a doubleheader split versus Bowling Green Friday afternoon at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
After dropping an extra-inning pitchers' duel in the opener by a score of 2-1 (9), the Cardinals (20-26; 13-9 MAC) rallied for a 7-2 win over the Falcons (26-15; 12-9 MAC) in the nightcap.
Â
With the split, Ball State remains half a game ahead of Bowling Green in the race for one of four spots in the upcoming MAC Tournament which will run May 12-14 at the site of the No. 1 seed.
Â
In the opener, senior Deborah Jones limited the Falcons to six hits and one earned run over 9.0 innings of work. Unfortunately, the offense never found a rhythm against her BGSU counterpart, registering just four hits and one run in the 2-1 loss.
Â
After the Falcons scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning, the Cardinals were able to capitalize on a leadoff double from senior catcher Delanie Johnson and a one-out RBI single from senior left fielder Faith Hensley to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth, when Bowling Green was able to push across what proved to be the game-winning run. Despite suffering the loss, Jones did strikeout six batters.
Â
Ball State's offense came to life in the bottom of the first in the nightcap, however, scoring five runs on three hits in the opening frame. Freshman third baseman Emma Richards and sophomore first baseman Samantha-Jo Mata drove in the first two runs with an RBI double and RBI single, respectively.
Â
Johnson put the Cardinals in complete control moments later with a three-run blast, her fifth home run of the season and the 10th of her Ball State career.
Â
Redshirt junior designated player Jazmyne Armendariz added an RBI single in the third, pushing the score to 6-0. After BGSU countered with two runs in the top of the fourth, Ball State added one more on a two-out RBI double from Hensley in the bottom of the fifth to give the game its final score of 7-2.
Â
Freshman Angelina Russo turned in another solid effort in the circle, limiting BGSU to four hits and one earned run over her 7.0 innings of work. She also struck out six batters.
Â
The Cardinals and Falcons will close their three-game series Saturday with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch on First Merchants Bank Fan Appreciation Day. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a free lunch package, while the first 200 fans will receive a free event t-shirt.
Â
Prizes will also be given away throughout the day, including a pair of televisions. Fans can also return foul balls to the press box for $1 (limit of 25 foul balls for the game).
