Softball Falls Run Short in Series Finale vs. Bowling Green
April 30, 2022 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite some more brilliant pitching, the Ball State softball team suffered a 2-1 setback to Bowling Green in the series finale Saturday afternoon at the softball field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
In front of a packed house for First Merchants Ballpark Fan Appreciation Day, the Cardinals (20-27; 13-10 MAC) received solid effort from both junior Deborah Jones and freshman Angelina Russo in the circle.
Â
Jones threw the first 5.2 innings, limiting the Falcons (27-15; 13-9 MAC) to just five hits and two runs while adding three strikeouts. Russo, who entered with two runners on in the top of the sixth, struck out the first batter she faced and allowed no hits of runs over her 1.1 innings of work.
Â
Unfortunately, the Ball State offense had another tough day against the league's top pitcher in BGSU's Payton Gottshall, tallying just five hits and one run in the contest.
Â
Like Friday's pitchers' duel which lasted nine innings, the Falcons were able to jump on top early, scoring a run in the top of the first.
Â
Ball State countered in the bottom of the third starting with a one-out bunt single from sophomore center fielder Hannah Dukeman. After Dukeman stole second, junior third baseman Haley Wynn blasted a two-out RBI double to the fence in center field to even the score.
Â
After a scoreless fourth, BGSU tallied the game's final run with a two-out RBI single to center.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action Tuesday when it opens a three-game series at Miami. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Miami Softball Stadium.
