Cardinals Tame Huskies for Series Sweep

DEKALB, Ill. – The Ball State baseball team completed the four-game series sweep of Northern Illinois on Monday. Casey Bargo improved to 2-0 in a stellar start on the mound as the Cardinals claimed a 15-1 victory over the Huskies.
With the win, BSU improved to 25-14 overall and 18-4 in MAC games, while NIU fell to 7-31 overall and 6-16 in conference play.
Amir Wright has reached safely in 38 of 39 games this season and has reached safely in 12 straight. Trenton Quartermaine extended his streak to 15-straight games reaching base safely.
Wright and Nick Powell led the Cardinals offensively with three hits each, while Wright drove in a career-high six RBIs. Ryan Peltier scored a game-high three runs to go along with his 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Peltier got things started with two outs in the top of the second with a single to left field. He then stole second to move into scoring position. Justin Conant drove in Peltier with an RBI single to right field. The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead after two innings.
Zach Cole reached safely on an error by the first baseman with one out in the top of the fourth. After Cole stole second, Peltier grounded out to third and moved Cole to third. Conant drew a five-pitch walk. Matthew Rivera was walked on four pitches to load the bases. A passed ball moved all runners up a base and allowed Cole to score. A wild pitch followed that allowed Conant to score and moved Rivera to third. After Zach Lane drew a walk, Wright singled up the middle and drove in Rivera to extend the BSU lead to 4-0 with four innings in the books.
Powell was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the fifth. Hunter Dobbins belted a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run home run to extend the BSU lead to 6-0. Peltier notched a one-out single down the left field line and then stole second. Conant and Rivera drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Wright. Wright singled to left field that drove in Peltier and Conant and gave the Cardinals an 8-0 lead after five innings.
Northern Illinois got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an Eric Erato double to left center.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Ball State put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth. Powell led off the inning with a triple down the left field line. Cole was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. Cole stole second before Peltier was walked to load the bases. Rivera drew a two-out walk to score Powell from third. Cole then scored on a wild pitch. Lane walked to load the bases for Wright, once again. Like earlier in the game, Wright delivered, this time with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to put the Cardinals on top 13-1. Quartermaine was walked to give BSU runners on first and second with two outs. Powell then roped a double to left center that drove in Wright and Quartermaine. A seven-run eighth inning extended the Ball State lead to 15-1.
Steven Washilewski came in and tossed a scoreless eighth to induce the run-rule and gave the Cardinals a 15-1 victory.
Bargo tallied a career-high eight strikeouts in six innings of work. He picked up the win and improved to 2-0 on the season. Ryan Brown added one inning of shutout relief. Washilewski went the final inning with one strikeout.
Tommy Meyer got the start for NIU and picked up the loss. He fell to 0-3. He surrendered four runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out two batters. The Northern Illinois bullpen went four innings of relief and surrendered 11 earned runs on eight hits.
The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for a four-game stint against the No. 1 team in the MAC standings, Central Michigan. First pitch on Friday, April 29, is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Ball State Athletics will host First Merchants Ballpark Fan Day on Saturday, April 30, as the baseball team hosts Central Michigan at noon and the softball team welcomes Bowling Green for a 1 p.m. first pitch next door.
It will be the event's fourth edition of gathering the community to support Ball State baseball and softball which are both in MAC title hunts.
The usual exciting trip to the ballpark will be infused with more fun thanks to First Merchants Bank, as the following deals and promotions will be in play: The first 300 spectators to arrive will receive a lunch package good for a hot dog, chips, and Pepsi drink. The first 200 spectators at each venue will receive an event T-Shirt (one shirt per fan). There will be drawings for prize packs during each inning
As always with baseball and softball games at Ball State, admission and parking are free of charge with games taking place inside the First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
