GAME 1 RECAP: Ball State 10 – Toledo 2
After being held scoreless in Friday's series opener, the Ball State offense came out strong in the top of the first Saturday, tallying three runs. Senior left fielder Faith Hensley started the game with a single to left and an error on a sac bunt from Wynn gave BSU a pair of base runners.
Â
A walk to senior shortstop Amaia Daniel then loaded the bases, while senior catcher Delanie Johnson was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Ball State's second run came courtesy of a fielders' choice from Richards.
Â
With runners on the corners, Richards stole second, while a walk to sophomore center fielder Remington Ross loaded the bases once again. Mata made it a 3-0 game moments later with a sac fly to right field.
Â
While the Rockets were able to cut Ball State's lead to one run by plating a pair in the bottom of the second, the Cardinals answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull ahead 5-2.
Â
Those second-inning runs were the only ones Russo would surrender, as she limited Toledo three hits to pick up the complete game victory. She also struck out five batters over her 7.0 innings of work.
Â
BSU's run in the fourth came on a sac fly from Wynn, driving home Mathews who singled to open the inning, moved to second on a passed ball, and advanced third on a wild pitch.
Â
Redshirt junior designated player Jazmyne Armendariz got into the action in the top of the fifth, following a two-out single from Mata with an RBI double to left.
Â
Hensley made it a 6-2 game in the top of the sixth, starting with a leadoff single. After moving to second on a groundout, she stole third and then scored on a passed ball.
Â
The Cardinals added four more runs in the top of the seventh to give the game it's finals score of 10-2. Ross reached on an error to open the inning, and after stealing second, scored on an RBI single up the middle from Mata. Armendariz followed with a single to center, giving BSU a pair of base runners and setting up a two-out, three-run blast from Wynn, her fifth of the season.
Â
GAME 2 RECAP: Ball State 9 – Toledo 5
The Cardinals jumped out to another early lead in the second game, capitalizing on a leadoff walk to Hensley who stole second before scoring on a two-out double from Mata.
Â
While the Rockets answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals followed a scoreless second with a seven-run barrage in the third to pull ahead 8-2.
Â
Mathews started the inning with a statement, joining the Ball State bomb squad with her first career home run to even the score. Hensley then reached on an error, advancing all the way to third to set up an RBI single from Wynn to give BSU the 3-2 lead.
Â
After Daniel reached on UT's second error of the inning, a sac bunt from Mata pushed both runners into scoring position. The sacrifice worked to perfection, as Johnson drove both home with a single to give BSU a 5-2 edge. Johnson would also advance to second on the throw in, before being replaced by pinch runner Kaitlyn Gibson.
Â
Following a pitching change, the speedy Gibson moved to third on single by Ross before catching the Toledo defense off guard and scoring. Ross would move herself into scoring position moments later by stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Richards then drove her home with a double to center field, before advancing to third on a groundout and scoring on Mathews' second RBI hit of the frame, a single to left.
Â
While the Rockets were able to chip away at the lead, scoring two in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals added one more in the seventh on another RBI double from Richards to win the game 9-5.
Â
Jones would earn her fourth win of the season in the circle, limiting Toledo to five hits and a pair of earned runs in a complete game effort. She also struck out three batters to raise her career total to 195.
