April 10, 2022 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Ball State baseball team, ranked No. 25 by Collegiate Baseball, returned to PK Park on Sunday for the final game of a four-game stint against the No. 13/21 Oregon Ducks. Adam Christianson and Ryan Peltier each went 2-for-3 with a home run, but the Cardinals fell to the Ducks, 7-6, on a walk-off hit.
Zach Cole extended his hitting streak to eight games. With the loss, Ball State fell to 18-12, while Oregon improved to 21-11.
The Ducks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a three-run second inning on three hits.
Aiden Hinds led off the top of the fourth with a six-pitch walk. Amir Wright was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Nick Powell singled to right center to load the bases for the Cardinals with one out. Cole lined one off the right field wall for a double and drove in Hinds and Wright. Matthew Rivera was intentionally walked to load the bases. Christianson drew a walk on five pitches to score Powell from third. Ryan Peltier gave Ball State its first lead of the day with a sac fly to right field as Cole scored. BSU took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Oregon tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with one run on three hits and one left on base. Cole came up with a huge outfield assist as he threw out a runner trying to score, which helped limit the Ducks from scoring more in the inning.
The Ducks regained the lead on a solo home run by Gavin Grant and took a 5-4 lead into the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Oregon added a run to take a 6-4 lead.
Christianson led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run to right field on the first pitch of the at bat. Peltier followed suit with a monster shot over the scoreboard in left field to supply the Cardinals with back-to-back home runs. Ball State sent the game tied 6-6 into the home half of the eighth.
Oregon claimed a 7-6 victory on a walk-off single to left field by Bryce Boettcher.
Christianson, Peltier, and Cole all produced two hits, and each had two RBIs on the day to lead the Cardinal offense.
Casey Bargo got the start for Ball State and went 3 1/3 innings with one strikeout. He surrendered three earned runs on five hits. Andre Orselli went one inning in relief and gave up one earned run on three hits. Ryan Brown added 1 2/3 innings in relief with one strikeout and one earned run on three hits. Jake Lewis tossed 1/3 of an inning with an unearned run on one hit. Sam Klein got the loss in two innings in relief and fell to 2-2 on the season. Klein struck out one and surrendered one earned run on two hits.
It was a bullpen by committee for the Ducks, like it was for the Cardinals. Kolby Somers picked up the win for Oregon with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. He improved to 2-2 on the season. Ellis Scott got the start and went one inning with a strikeout.
The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for a Mid-American Conference series with the Akron Zips. First pitch on Friday, April 15, is scheduled for 3 p.m.
From the Coach – Head Coach Rich Maloney
"Our boys played their hearts out all weekend. We went toe-to-toe with a solid Oregon team who is a projected No. 2 seed. Each of the games could've gone either way. I am proud of our boys. I believe in this team."
