Cardinals Ground Rockets Behind Strong Pitching, 14 Hits

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team took to the diamond for the first Mid-American Conference road game of the season at Toledo on Friday. The Cardinals improved to 15-8 overall and 10-1 in MAC play with the 8-1 victory, while the Rockets fell to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Trennor O'Donnell picked up his third win of the season and improved to 3-2. O'Donnell, Maxwell McKee, and Casey Bargo held Toledo to just four hits on the day. The trio combined for 10 strikeouts.
Amir Wright extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and he has reached base safely in all 23 games of the season. Trenton Quartermaine launched a team-leading eighth home run and he has reached safely in nine straight games.
The Rockets put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first and second innings, but O'Donnell closed the door to get out of the innings unscathed.
Zach Cole doubled to right center to get things started for the Cardinals in the top of the third. Zach Lane flew out to center and moved Cole to third. Wright reached safely on a throwing error by the Rocket pitcher and allowed Cole to score. BSU held a 1-0 lead into the home half of the third.
The Rockets tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third on four walks and stranded the bases loaded.
Ryan Peltier led off the top of the fifth with a double off the center field wall. Justin Conant flew out down the right field line and moved Peltier to third. Cole recorded his second hit of the game with a single to center and scored Peltier from third. Ball State regained the lead, 2-1, as the game went to the bottom of the fifth.
Quartermaine notched a one-out single through the right side to get the top of the sixth started for BSU. Nick Powell followed with a double to left center to put runners at second and third with one out. Matthew Rivera came up with a huge two-out single up the middle to drive in Quartermaine and Powell.
Conant started the top of the seventh with a single through the left side. Cole dropped down a perfectly placed bunt down the third baseline that stopped just inside the line. Wright followed with a single to right field to drive in Conant. Quartermaine picked up an RBI with a single through the right side as Cole scored.
Ball State held a 6-1 lead as the game went to the ninth inning. Quartermaine launched his eighth home run of the season and extended the BSU lead to 7-1. Powell was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a ground out by Adam Christianson. Rivera tallied his third RBI on the day with a single to left field.
The Cardinals went on to win the game 8-1 behind a solid pitching performance. O'Donnell went 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and surrendered one earned run on three hits. McKee went 2 2/3 innings in relief and added three strikeouts and allowed no hits. Bargo notched one strikeout and gave up just one hit.
Quartermaine and Cole finished the game with three hits each, while five of the nine hitters produced a multiple-hit game. Rivera drove in a game-high three RBIs.
Ball State put up five earned runs to the reigning MAC Co-Pitcher of the Week, Kyle Jones. Jones went 6 1/3 innings and struck out five Cardinal batters. Parker Newby went 2 2/3 innings in relief with two strikeouts and two earned runs.
The Cardinals return to Scott Park for a doubleheader against the Rockets on Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon.
