
Long Ball, Strong Pitching Leads to Cardinals’ Victory Over Rattlers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Ball State baseball team returned to the field for game one of a four-game series with Florida A&M on Friday. The Cardinals used the long ball on the way to a 6-3 victory over the Rattlers.
For the third-straight game, Trenton Quartermaine has recorded a home run.
Amir Wright got the game started as he reached safely with a walk. Wright has reached safely in nine-consecutive games. Justin Conant dropped down a sac bunt to move Wright to second. Nick Powell delivered an RBI single to center to score Wright.
In the top of the second inning, Decker Scheffler launched a one-out home run to right field, his first of the season.
In the top of the fifth, Wright notched a sac fly to left which scored Zach Lane. Adam Christian also scored on the fly out after a throwing error by the FAMU catcher. Ball State held a 4-0 lead after four and a half innings.
Quartermaine launched a one-out homer over the right field wall for his third of the season in the top of the sixth for BSU.
The Rattlers cut the lead to 5-2 in the home half of the sixth.
Lane reached on an error to start the top of the seventh. Lane stole second to move into scoring position. Andre Orselli came up clutch with a single to center to drive in Lane from second. The Cardinals held a 6-2 lead after the top of the seventh.
Florida A&M got a run in the bottom of the eight to cut the Ball State lead to 6-3.
Tyler Schweitzer got the start for the Cardinals and pitched six solid innings. He struck out eight batters and gave up two earned runs on four hits on his way to his first victory of the season. Sam Klein picked up his second save of the season. Klein went 1 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.
DJ Wilkison got the loss with six strikeouts, five earned runs, and six hits in seven innings of work.
The Cardinals return to Moore-Kittles Field for a doubleheader with the Rattlers on Saturday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
