Winning Streak Reaches Seven Games as Cardinals Take Two from Broncos

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team was back in action at the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex on Monday for two Mid-American Conference games against Western Michigan. Despite being on their home field, the Cardinals were the visitors in both games.
Amir Wright extended his hitting streak to nine games and has reached base safely in all 22 games this season. Zach Lane has been hot as of late and now has a seven-game hitting streak.
Tyler Schweitzer and Ryan Brown both had career days on the mound for the Cardinals. Schweitzer picked up his fourth win of the season behind a career-high 11 strikeouts in game one. Brown recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of relief and got the win in game two.
Ball State moved to 14-8 overall and 9-1 in conference play, while Western Michigan fell to 4-15 overall and 2-4 in the MAC.
Game One – BSU 2, WMU 0
Wright started the game with a single up the middle. Wright moved to third on a single by Trenton Quartermaine. Nick Powell put the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single through the left side as Wright scored.
Justin Conant led off the top of the fifth with a triple to right center. CJ Horn notched a sac fly to left as Conant tagged up and scored.
The Cardinals won the pitcher duel in game one, 2-0.
The Ball State pitching staff held Western Michigan to just three hits in game one. Schweitzer improved to 4-2 on the year behind a record day. He tallied 11 strikeouts to set a career high and scattered three hits. Sam Klein picked up his sixth save on the season with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Klein struck out two batters and did not give up a hit.
Dane Armbrustmacher got the loss and fell to 1-2. He went six innings with six strikeouts and gave up two earned runs. Brenden Lovell retired all three batters he faced in his lone inning of relief.
Game Two – BSU 12, WMU 5
After a scoreless first inning of game two, Adam Christianson led off the top of the second with a single through the left side. Ryan Peltier reached on an error by the third baseman to give BSU two runners on with no outs. Zach Lane came up with a huge two-out triple to left center and put the Cardinals on top 2-0.
Quartermaine led off the top of the third with a walk. Powell followed with a double down the left field line. After two outs, Peltier reached safely on a throwing error by the short stop and moved up to second as Quartermaine and Powell both scored. Conant drove in the third run of the inning with a double to left center. BSU held a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.
Wright reached safely on a throwing error to start things in the top of the fourth with one out. Wright moved up to third on a single through the right side by Quartermaine. Powell drove in Wright with a single up the middle. With two outs and two runners on, Christianson launched a three-run homer to right field that landed on Tillotson Avenue. Ball State led 9-0 after three and a half innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos recorded four runs on three hits and left the bases loaded. WMU cut the BSU lead to 9-4 after four innings.
Conant was hit by a pitch to start the fifth inning. Lane nearly put a ball on McGalliard Road as he belted a two-run home run over the left field wall.
Western Michigan closed the deficit in the bottom of the fifth as WMU scored one run on two hits to make the score 11-5 after five innings of play.
Conant started the seventh inning with a six-pitch walk. After he stole second, he was moved over to third on a ground out by Lane. Wright notched a two-out single to left field to drive in Conant and give Ball State an insurance run.
The Cardinals relied on a stout bullpen that combined for 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings in relief. Ty Johnson got the start for the Cardinals and went 3 1/3 innings. He gave up four earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Nate Dohm went 1 1/3 innings with an earned run on three hits and two strikeouts. Brown picked up his first win of the season with 3 1/3 innings of relief. Brown tallied a career-high nine strikeouts and scattered just two hits. Maxwell McKee added a perfect inning in the bottom of the nineth to close out the 12-5 Cardinal victory.
Joe Shapiro got the loss in game two. He went 3 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs, none of them earned, and struck out three batters.
Ball State returns to the road for a four-game series at Toledo beginning on Friday, April 1. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
