Cardinals Sweep Falcons with 9-4 Victory Monday

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team was back in action at the Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex on Monday for the final game of the four-game series with Bowling Green. The Cardinals completed the series sweep behind a 9-4 victory as Trenton Quartermaine, Matthew Rivera, and Justin Conant all tallied three hits each.
For the 20th-straight game Amir Wright has reached base safely. He is currently on a seven-game hitting streak, which is the best from a Cardinal hitter this season. Rivera is on a five-game hitting streak.
BSU improved to 12-8 overall and 7-1 in Mid-American Conference action, while BGSU fell to 2-15 overall and 0-8 in conference play. The Cardinals have won five-straight games.
After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Jack Krause hit a three-run homer for BGSU.
Conant notched a one-out single to left center to get the bottom of the third inning started for the Cardinals. Zach Lane followed with a single to center to put runners on first and second with one out. Wright reached safely as he grounded into a fielder's choice with Lane being out at second. Quartermaine put Ball State on the board with a two-run single down the fight field line. After Nick Powell was hit by a pitch, Rivera doubled down the left field line to score Quartermaine and Powell.
The bottom of the fifth inning saw three doubles. Wright led the inning off with a double to left center. Quartermaine drove in Wright with a double to right center. Rivera drove in Quartermaine with a double down the right field line. The Cardinals took a 6-3 lead into the sixth inning.
Conant recorded a one-out double down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth. Lane lined a pitch down the left field line that scored Conant. Wright reached with an infield single. Quartermaine posted an RBI single to right field as Lane scored. Rivera singled to center to drive in Wright as Ball State took a 9-3 lead.
The Falcons added a run in the top of the eighth as Kyle Gurney homered to center. The Cardinals went on to win the contest 9-4.
Ty Weatherly got a no decision behind 3 2/3 innings in the start. He struck out seven batters and gave up three earned runs. Nate Dohm collected the win and improved to 1-1 on the year. Dohm struck out four in 4 1/3 innings in relief with one earned run. Jake Lewis struck out the only batter he faced, while Maxwell McKee recorded the final two outs of the game.
Owen Recker picked up the loss in four innings of work for the Falcons and gave up five earned runs on six hits. Jeremy Spezia went two innings in relief and surrendered four earned runs.
The Cardinals return to the diamond for another four-game MAC series at Western Michigan. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 25, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
